Carbon cycle questions for science students
Questions (with explanations) to test students’ understanding of the carbon cycle especially on what happens to the food they eat and the fuels they use, and the role played by the sun. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of our science teaching at GCSE we tested a small group of undergraduates as they start their university degree and make a comparison with a similar survey more than 20 years previously. Based on our findings, student understanding about the material nature of gases and the role of oxygen in respiration and combustion remains much the same over the last twenty years. We question whether secondary science may focus too heavily on complexities rather than on the big ideas of matter and energy – ideas which are often lost when science is taught in separate subjects? This article begins with an attempt to simplify the overarching science concepts then reports the research findings.
