This unit provides the opportunity for students to join a pioneer trek on the way to a valley distant from an established colonial settlement. On arrival, after several difficulties, the new settlers have the challenge of establishing and mapping their new settlement. There are 5 groups that will add dimension to the new settlement. Each one has preferences for sections withing the landscape. They announce these from a vantage point and then move on to the task of planing and mapping out the settlement. The final map allows some flexibility but the aim is to end up with a final map of the valley where the settlers reach. Although based on Australian resources this activity based on mapping development and skills does have wider relevance. Join the challenge and create the map.
