The perfect history-economics crossover if your pupils are exploring a Stone Age topic: get them into character as Palaeolithic cave-people with this bartering activity!

There’s a reason humans invented money, and this activity will quickly show how much more of a headache the alternative is!

  • Get pupils into groups of 6
  • Tell them they’re going to become a mini ‘tribe’ of stone age cave people (sing-syllable caveman/cavewoman names optional!)
  • Assign each group member a number (1-6)
  • Set up the scenario: ‘you have the things shown at the top of your card. Your aim is to trade these for the things at the bottom of your card’
  • Let the bartering begin! It shouldn’t be easily possible for all group members to get what they want, but it does happen sometimes!
  • Finish with a discussion - what was difficult about this task? Why do you think money was eventually invented?
