How often, when pushed for time, have you wished for a ready-made resources that you can project, discuss and then provide students with a hard copy for them to work with. This unit grants that wish. This basic map completion activity is designed for use in upper-primary to mid- secondary levels. Project the first page (coloured) and examine the main map elements of Scale, Direction, Key (Legend) and eventually Title. Ask your students why each of these elements are important in preparing the map. For example - How do the features in the Key (Legend) assist in reading the information on the map? How does the direction finder assist in deciding where to place the features? Attachment pages of the coloured map and the black and white map are given so you can choose which hard copy to provide. This is a teacher-help stand alone unit. It aims to make students recognise the place of the key map elements by by requiring them to employ them as they complete the map. Some will produce clear and well presented final maps. Others, well others may be less refined. Accept the efforts and enjoy the activity.
