This ranking activity is designed to get students thinking and discussing the definition of poetry. (It is very difficult to define!) I used it in a Year 9 class (14-15 year old students) with great success. Use the powerpoint first and discuss the meanings of each quote then allow the students 10-15 minutes to arrrange and discuss their quotes as a group, then share responses with the class. As students completed the activity, I toured the room and challenged their arrangements of the quotes to engage higher order thinking. A great introductory activity for a poetry unit.
