This is a worksheet for SEN students in mixed ability classes, to learn the basic components of plant and animal cells. It targets Years 7, 8 and 9, introducing concepts and keywords that will appear more fully in exam curriculums of Years 10 and 11. It is highly visual to help those challenged by spelling, handwriting, short-term memory, etc., and heavily scaffolded including clues for the names of the eight cell constituents. An ‘extension’ tasks students with drawing and colouring their own cell – to strengthen recall and spelling. Its simplicity enables a high proportion of SEN students to complete it, thus building confidence.
The drawing section shows a link to the sun (planting the idea for a later discussion of photosynthesis), and a seedling (providing an indication of size and importance, and reminder that the cell is from a plant).
Version b, has no clues for the names of organelles and can be used for the rest of the class, providing a neat visual record of the main cell constituents.
Alternatively, the sheet can be cut into two for use as Lesson Starters to (1) recall previous teaching or (2) as a task to show students did the homework you set last lesson on researching constituents of a cell. If you use them as Starters, you may like to hand out according to who prefers to draw and who prefers to write i.e. avoiding any focus on SEN students at all.
Both documents are in pdf format.
