This listening lesson is based on a speech by American astrophysicist, author and science communicator Neil deGrasse Tyson in which he describes the importance of critical thinking. The lesson focus is more than just listening for detail and understanding, it also includes exercises to introduce the students to new vocabulary, a discussion where students practice sharing their opinions, and a task based learning exercise. The topic and range of tasks in this lesson will stimulate your students’ interest and encourage authentic speaking. By the end of the lesson, students will have learned new vocabulary, practiced language for discussion and had the opportunity to share their opinions. It’s a great lesson to use with professionals, but also college and university students who are developing their independent learning skills.
