I did this with my year 3 class. They used rulers to measure things in the classroom and to find out the perimeter.

I also had a "challenge box" set up for student's who wanted a bit of a riddle to solve (extension). I put a roll of string and a meter stick in a box with a question that said: How could I measure the perimeter of something using string?

The children really had to think about this one - most started by measuring the string but after a bit of trial and error realized what they had to do and were able to measure an object using the string.

The only change I would make is next time I would tell students they must have a certain number of questions completed correctly (checked by me) before going onto the challenge.

We had several chocolate bars laying around from our class topic of chocolate but the top 3 boxes could easily be edited to measure something else.
