The ageing engineering workforce of the Defence Equipment and Support (DE+S) department and MOD prompted this huge public sector employer to pilot the Apprenticeship programme. In 2004, with the support of City of Bristol College, 10 teenage trainee engineers were taken on. The results proved so successful that in 2008 the number of apprentices employed was increased to 38 and to 97 a year later.
