Since two bombs obliterated the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 and ended the Second World War, nuclear weapons have been considered the ultimate deterrent. Have they made the world a safer place? Today, nine countries possess around 16,300 nuclear weapons. As a historic deal aims to stop Iran from joining them, this is a selection of stories which look at some of the key issues.
