SPITS: a guide to writing about poetry

This resource provides a revision aid supporting the analysis of poetry uses the S.P.I.T.S guide as a basis. Subject Matter, Purpose, theme or message, Identify emotion, mood or feeling Technique SLIMS… S – Structure (stanza division etc) L – Language (how would you describe the poet’s use of words?) I – Imagery (what is the effect of similes and metaphors?) M – Movement and rhythm (regular or irregular? Effect?) S – Sounds (alliteration, rhyme, assonance, onomatopoeia) Summary (your response)
