This group task encourages students to think about the ways in which William of Normandy faced difficulties in taking control of England, and invites them to suggest how he can enforce his grip on the nation. The problem cards take the form of mock letters and diary entries from various Normans, seeking advice to resolve problems, such as the need to raise taxes, or the power of the church. Students respond to letter by identifying the problem to hand, and proposing a solution. The response grid also has a space to record William’s approach.
