Leadership Reading

For teachers thinking about their first step on the leadership ladder, or for current leaders who want to refresh their knowledge of policy changes, here are four go-to documents. Put the kettle on and get stuck in. Each one will give you a better understanding of the education landscape, and what new changes mean for your schools.

1.  The curriculum

In 2017, Amanda Spielman, HM Chief Inspector of Education, Children's Services and Skills, commissioned a major, two-year research study into the curriculum.

Spielman has written commentaries on the three phases of the study, available to read here:

Phase onephase two, and phase three.

2. The new Ofsted framework

Ofsted have released a consultation on their new framework 'Education inspection framework 2019: inspecting the substance of education' along with a commentary on what research underpins Ofsted's proposed education inspection framework.

You can read more about the responses to the proposed framework here.

3. Progress 8

Check out the Government’s explanation of what Progress 8 (P8) is, and how it is calculated (PDF). This is essential reading for anyone who is responsible for data, particularly at a whole school level.

However, for a more nuanced look at how P8 can impact upon individual schools and contexts, you should also try reading this Department for Education report (PDF).

4. SEN

Provisions for students with additional educational needs is the responsibility for every teacher in a school.

However, at leadership level you are expected to have an even more detailed understanding of your statutory requirements. Be sure to read the latest guidance for high needs funding arrangements as well as the most up to date version of the SEND code of practice.
