White Rose Maths - Year 4- Place Value - Negative Numbers (Varied Fluency)

(0)
A set of varied fluency worksheets to use alongside the White Rose Maths scheme. The questions have been differentiated 3 ways, each with an individual sheet of questions for that level. Answers are also included. This set of worksheets are for Year 4, Autumn Block 1 (Place Value), focusing on the thirteenth small step of negative numbers. Details of how it has been differentiated can be found below: • 1 Star sheet (Working Towards Expected Level): Be able to count forwards and backwards in single increments to -10. • 2 Star sheet (Expected Level): Be able to count forwards and backwards in varied increments to -25. • 3 Star sheet (Working at greater depth): Be able to count forwards and backwards in varied increments to -25 including decimals. Each worksheet contains a total of 6 questions, some broken down into parts (a,b,c,d etc.) with 3 different question types. This provides children with the varied fluency that White Rose aim for. These questions can be used as a quick starter and cut up so that only set questions are used, or given as more of a main summary/practice activity with all questions. They could also be used for partner work, depending on the ability of the children. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Likewise, I am still developing these resources, so any helpful comments would also be appreciated.

Positive & Negative Integers Introduction LessonQuick View

Positive & Negative Integers Introduction Lesson

(0)
This lesson provides an introduction to positive and negative integers. It begins by explaining what an integer is and discussing different examples of how we use negative integers in real life. It then has a few different examples and discussion points using real life examples which can be done as whole class, individuals or groups e.g. weather, money etc. The resource then goes on to describe positive integers as hot numbers and negative integers as cold numbers. I find this really helps learners when performing calculations involving integers. The resource also contains a simple tug of war game that can be printed and played in pairs or played on the board with volunteers. For the game, someone is positive and someone is negative, they roll a dice and they move that number of spaces on the number line. Negative player moves to the left and positive player to the right. The winner is the person who makes it to their end of the number line. This is just a very simple game that encourages the children to add positive or negative integers and helps them visualise it on a number line. The resource then goes through different examples of adding and subtraction integers. It has a visual number line to support learners. When explaining this to learners, I use the terminology of hot and cold numbers and use the example of a drink e.g. adding hot numbers will increase the temperature, adding cold numbers will decrease it or subtracting hot numbers will decrease the temperature and subtracting cold numbers will increase the temperature. Finally, there are 6 quick questions that learners can answer and this can be used as a means of formative assessment.

Halloween Maths - negative numbers maze

(1)
This Halloween maths adding and subtracting negative numbers maze will give students lots of practise adding and subtracting up to 3 negative numbers. A great seasonal activity to engage students this Halloween. Great for a starter/plentary or early finishers near Halloween. Especially if you want students to practice and consolidate adding and subtracting negative numbers without using a traditional worksheet. This activity is great because students can check their own answers as they go through and most of the time they don’t realise they are answering multiple questions. This product includes 1 maze with solutions and some great Halloween clip art. Students work their way through the maze, coloring the correct answers and following the path to the next question. See here for more Halloween maths activities.
