Understanding an using Natural Light to Make Portraits in Photography.

(0)
This is a brand new resource made in September 2025. It takes learners through how to make good (and bad) portraits using natural light both outdoors and indoors. You will need dslr (or film) cameras for this activity - though it could be adapted for smartphone use. You will need a piece of white board or card, and ideally a photography reflector disc (not head) which are quite affordable online. The details of this are on the lesson. You can opt to do this session with just the white card/board. All images in this lesson are my own, unless cited otherwise. There are activities to be done in class and one more suitable to homework. You are at liberty to change, add, delete bits as you see fit and are appropriate to your context. Please do NOT use the images or PowerPoint outside of it’s use as a lesson. Thank you.

Students may come to study this visual course with little previous experience of doing a sketchbook/workbook (interchangeable terms). This simple PowerPoint gives them a basic idea and structure to use for making their own digital workbooks that should get them into good habits. Whilst creativity is encouraged in their photographic work, a sketchbook is to be assessed and so needs to be clear, well set out and arranged logically. This should help them start that. This is a good worksheet/guide to use alongside Workbook Contents worksheet, as an ongoing independent resource for learners. This is drawn from my years of experience as a practicing photographer and visual arts/photography teacher and has been freshly updated in August 2025. A teaching resource for art/photography teachers and facilitators that can be adapted from school up to university level, that has been developed from my twenty years of knowledge and experience as a photographer and visual arts teacher. Going to look at artwork is a key part of a creative experience and project, and students may not know how to record this so it is well linked to their own projects, ideas and thinking. This is a good worksheet/guide to use on a visit and for students going on independent trips. Do let them have access to this resource in plenty of time before you/they go and go through it with them to answer questions they may have. Add/change as you need. This is drawn from my years of experience as a practicing photographer and visual arts/photography teacher and has been freshly updated in August 2025. A teaching resource for photography teachers and facilitators that can be adapted from school up to university level, that has been developed from my twenty years of knowledge and experience as a photographer and visual arts teacher. This is a worksheet to be used as a helpful guide for students on photography courses to use, to understand how to participate in peer crit sessions giving constructive feedback. This is a skill students must also learn and will take time to develop but this worksheet will support that. It would be best to allow them access to this well in advance of any peer crit session and go through it with them adding your own knowledge and experience to assuage their concerns. Students often misunderstand what ‘being critical’ is and it this is a good tool to help them surmount nerves around this and foster creative supportive classes! This is drawn from my years of experience as a practicing photographer and visual arts/photography teacher and has been freshly updated in August 2025.
