Cross-curricular starter activities for European Day of Languages

(2)
I have created 5 minute starter activities for a range of subjects across the curriculum in order to celebrate European Day of Languages. Each starter activity links that particular subject with languages. Each starter either involves a quick activity such as a match up task or it is a “did you know?” style information slide linking the subject to languages. The PowerPoint slides indicate which subject they refer to in the top left hand corner and there are instructions/answers underneath each slide. The idea is to make the activity as accessible and as easy as possible for other staff members to use so that they are inclined to include them in their lessons. I have sent the PowerPoint to all teaching staff in the hope that they will use them in order to support the languages department in celebrating the European Day of Languages. If successful then it will mean that the students have some exposure to language learning in all of their lessons throughout the day. The subjects that I have included are: Maths (x2) English (x3) Science (x2) Languages (x2) Geography (x2) History Religious Studies Physical Education (x2) Food Technology Textiles Technology Media Studies Drama (x2) Art Psychology (x2) Health and Social Care Business Studies Music Law Government & Politics Computing

GCSE Spanish - Starters to drill important verbs and opinion phrases

(0)
I have become increasingly frustrated with students not knowing the basic vocabulary that will help them to succeed in the exams for the new GCSE Spanish specification - particularly the Speaking and Writing exam. As a way of trying to remedy this I have created some starter activities to reinforce a range of opinion phrases and important verbs that students should have a confident grasp of. My colleague has created a similar resource based on important terms in GCSE Business Studies - she rotates the starter activities every lesson so that students almost become sick of seeing the same terms but they know them off by heart now. This is my aim with these resources! I hope they prove useful to anyone finding the same frustrating issues! This resource includes the following: Opinion phrases starter activities - 1. Match up the Spanish and English 2. Fill in the missing letters to find English translation of opinion phrases 3. Fill in the missing letters to find the Spanish translation of opinion phrases 4. Organise the opinion phrases from most negative to most positive and then translate into English 5. Sort the opinion phrases into two columns - positive and negative 6. Unjumble the Spanish opinion phrases - what do they mean in English? 7. Translate the sentences containing opinion phrases into English. There are also 3 worksheets on opinion phrases - a wordsearch, a crossword and a code breaker. Important verbs starter activities - 1. Match up the Spanish and English 2. Fill in the missing letters to find English translation of important verbs 3. Fill in the missing letters to find the Spanish translation of important verbs 4. Sort the verbs into the correct columns - talking about yourself, talking about others, talking about a thing/event 5. Unjumble the Spanish verbs - what do they mean in English? 6. Translate the sentences including important verbs into English There are also 2 worksheets on important verbs - a wordsearch and a code breaker. I have created the same resources in French. PLEASE NOTE THAT IN THE PREVIEW SOME OF THE PICTURES LOOK LIKE THEY ARE OVERLAPPING - THEY ARE NOT LIKE THIS IN THE ORIGINAL FILE. I HAVE DOWNLOADED THE RESOURCES MYSELF FROM TES TO DOUBLE CHECK THE LAYOUT AND IT IS ALL FINE AND NOT OVERLAPPING.

Year 10 GCSE Viva - Independent Work on Imperfect, Preterite and Present tenses

My students were feeling a bit unsure about the different tenses that we have been covering in lesson so far this year. Therefore I created independent tasks for them to research the present, preterite and imperfect tense using the Viva GCSE textbook grammar pages. These could be given as homework tasks if you photocopy the relevant pages from the textbook for the students or they could be given as independent work in lessons. I set two of them during lessons as this enabled me to go round and support students who were struggling with different aspects of the tense.
