Building Contextual Knowledge: A Pre-GCSE English Literature Scheme of Work (12 Lessons) Preparing students for GCSE English Literature through powerful voices, ideas and contexts. This 12-lesson scheme of work has been designed to build students’ contextual understanding before they begin studying GCSE English Literature texts. Rather than teaching context in isolation alongside each text, this unit introduces students to the key social, historical and moral ideas that underpin many GCSE Literature courses. The scheme was developed in response to a common challenge: students often struggle to understand and apply contextual knowledge when studying texts such as Macbeth, A Christmas Carol, An Inspector Calls and the AQA Power and Conflict Poetry Anthology. By introducing these concepts at the end of Year 9, students gain a strong foundation before beginning their GCSE studies. Through a carefully sequenced range of extracts, students explore key themes including: Leadership and power Poverty and social responsibility Gender roles and equality War and conflict Guilt and morality Personal and collective responsibility Students engage with a rich variety of voices and sources, including: Machiavelli Henry Mayhew Thomas Malthus Oxfam campaigns Florence Nightingale Victorian conduct books WWI letters Biblical extracts The scheme includes: 12 fully resourced lessons Clear learning objectives and key ideas Context and modern-day links Differentiated activities and scaffolds Discussion and debate tasks Reading comprehension and analytical questions Creative and transactional writing tasks (letters, speeches, diary entries, articles) Retrieval and reflection activities A final synoptic assessment requiring students to compare viewpoints and synthesise ideas from across the unit This unit works particularly well as a transition from KS3 to KS4 and helps students develop the contextual knowledge, critical thinking and non-fiction writing skills required for success at GCSE. Suitable for mixed-ability classes, with scaffolding and support included throughout.

Lesson 4 in a 5 lesson sequence to help improve descriptive writing techniques. Used with low ability KS4 but can be easily adapted up or down as required.

A selection of fully prepared powerpoint lessons to teach the fantastic book by Morris Gleitzman. Each powerpoint is split into sensible and workable sections of the book with activities to suit a range of learners. There are 14 individual lessons but a couple of the powerpoint slideshows have been further split to 2 or more lessons depending on the level of learners, there is also an extra lesson using the media suite (if you have access) to create character profile poster - great for classroom displays. Included are a practice and 'for real' reading assessment based on a character in the book. So all in all about 17 complete and fully resourced lessons. I have taught this book a number of times and some of the students really get involved and enjoy the story, characters and activities.
