Not every school leans into Halloween, so I have tried to make this as neutral as possible. If I were using this in class, I would dive into the mythology of some of the creatures and try some Gothic literature with an older class. Sometimes it can be useful to start with what words they might associate with Halloween too. Some creative Halloween activities at the end for you, just incase you’re feeling rebellious!

About this resource: Role play is such an important part of getting children to talk. Sometimes we are so focused on completing a task to achieve an outcome, we don’t always stop and build in time for talk. Some are easier to cut than others; that might be a secondary task here. Use these masks to step into the characteristics of the creature. Can they reenact a story of their own devising? What would be scarier is seeing me drawn these masks myself; that is why I had A.I. help me with my designs.

About this resource: There are some words that are just super important to have up around the classroom. While this is a list of common words you might find around this time of year, I have included some of those lost words that we don’t use as much anymore. There are also a few blank ones that you can use to add words the children want to add. You might want to even write these on leaves, hang them from sticks or hide them in the playground for them to find and collect. There is a page of creative ideas to use with these words.
