Gender Identity + Sex LGBT+ PSHE Lesson

2 HOURS A fully-resourced transgender PSHE / RSE lesson which serves as an introduction to the difference between sex and gender and explores sexuality, identity, language (correct terms) and gender expression. Students will explore new key terminology before investigating the key components of identity and sexual orientation, why some people still find some of the ideas behind this controversial (such as pronoun use) and then educate other students on a trait they will be working on and presenting in small groups (all information needed is included). This lesson is great to consolidate the PSHE 2020/24 spiral curriculum (especially for an LGBT+ unit) or for a Citizenship diversity unit. The lesson has been written for KS5 and is editable, so easy to adapt for your own PSHE planning. The lesson includes a detailed PowerPoint, detailed information sheets, differentiated challenge activities and worksheets, clips tasks with questions and a literacy / debate focus task. Why does gender seem to matter so much to some in the workplace and at school? What issues do women in particular face, why is this and how can society overcome them? What does it mean to be transgender? Who are the transgender role models and what can these people teach us about tolerance and gender fluidity? LGBT+ Month session - trans identity focus. What is the difference between sex and gender? What makes up our identity, our orientation and gender expression? What is the correct way to use the new terminology? What is Feminism? What has the movement achieved for gender equality and do we still need it? What is masculinity? What constitutes both toxic and positive masculinity? What effects do both of these have on males and wider society? What is biological sex? What is gender and what are gender roles? An investigation into all these questions and more. NEW - This lesson investigates the correct use of pronouns and also the rise of neo-pronouns. It invites students to make their own minds up about how useful neo-pronouns are and explains the correct use of pronouns for transgender people under the UK Equality Act, as a protected characteristic. It also talks about the use of pronouns and neo-pronouns between students, as well as how schools are advised by the government as of 2023 to handle changes in pronouns.
