Writing (composition)
Plan their writing by: - Identifying the audience for and purpose of the writing, selecting the appropriate form and using other similar writing as models for their own - In writing narratives, considering how authors have developed characters and settings in what pupils have read, listened to or seen performed Draft and write by: - Selecting appropriate grammar and vocabulary, understanding how such choices can change and enhance meaning - In narratives, describing settings and characters to convey character and advance the action - Précising longer passages - Using a wide range of devices to build cohesion within and across paragraphs Evaluate and edit by: - Assessing the effectiveness of their own and others’ writing - Proposing changes to vocabulary, grammar and punctuation to enhance effects and clarify meaning - Proof-read for spelling and punctuation errors
3 weeks lesson plans based on the new curriculum for Beowulf by Kevin Crossley-Holland. This unit of work builds up to the children writing their own version of an overcoming the monster story. Differentiated activities (3 ways - mild, medium and spicy) for week 1 and 2. SMART board resources provided.
Intended outcomes:
HA -
• Use the full range of punctuation taught at key stage 2, including colons and semi-colons to mark the boundary between independent clauses, mostly correctly.
• Use paragraphs accurately
• selecting verb forms for meaning and effect
MA
• Use inverted commas, commas for clarity, and punctuation for parenthesis mostly correctly, and making some correct use of semi-colons, dashes, colons and hyphens
• Make links between sentences and paragraphs, starting sentences in different ways
LA
• Write in full sentences using C .

• Extend sentences using conjunctions
