This resource is about donating at Christmas rather than giving gifts, and how donations can help humanitarian organisations such as MSF. It is designed for GCSE students, but could also be used as an introductory task for A-Level students on the topic of Feste und Traditionen – ihre soziale und wirtschaftliche Bedeutung heute. We also have a GCSE Spanish resource on this topic.
The resource has been created by Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) using our authentic materials. Teachers are encouraged to review and select content and activities to best match their students’ needs.
Fun activity to do at the end of term (takes around 30 minutes)- students watch a series of German christmas adverts, awarding a score and a comment for each using the worksheet provided. At the end of the lesson, vote for the best advert!

Quiz suitable for fun end of year or Christmas lessons
Accessible for a good KS3 class or perhaps a foundation GCSE class
All questions are in German, but use the simplest language possible. Where relevant, I have included the English translation of 1-2 keywords on the same slide.
There are five rounds, each with eight questions. All questions are somehow related to the German-speaking world: Geography, Who am I?, Culture and traditions, True or false + History
There is one tiebreaker question
Answers are included on a separate slide after each round
The quiz is available as a .pptx and .pdf file
This is a free sample of the quiz which shows the structure, design and one question from each round. The full quiz with all 41 questions is available here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/resource-12870358
8 creative questions for a German end of year quiz or Christmas quiz.
Can also be used as lesson starters, or as an activity mid-lesson to re-engage pupils.
Answers are available in the speaker notes section (scroll down if needed)!
This is a free sample of a full resource with 40 questions which is available here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/gcse-german-end-of-year-quiz-12859233

A fun song gap-fill which I normally use when it’s getting near christmas
I am sharing this for free, however if you are able to make a donation, here’s the link to buy me a coffee https://www.buymeacoffee.com/susierb
A German Christmas Quiz with 6 different rounds of questions and one on going round where the children have to find as many German words from the phrase: Frohe Weihnachten und ein gutes Neues Jahr!
I usually use this with my Year 7 classes but has been enjoyed by classes in different year groups that are new to me.
This PPT introduces some facts about Christmas traditions in Germany as a multiple choice-style quiz. At the end of the PPT, there is then an advent calendar-style game about the facts and vocab.
In this bundle you will find revision mats on
-Celebrations & Christmas
Self, family and relationships
Eating out
Music
Technology & Social Media
Marriage
Sport
TV and cinema
On each topics there are examples of definite delights, attention-grabbing adjectives, showstoppers, the perfect, future and conditional tenses.
I have frequently included key questions too.

This is a quick sentence builder to allow students to discuss what they did/ have done in the (Christmas) holidays. It is designed to be a 10-15 min activities which requires input from the teacher.
Ideally, students will have some experience of the past/ perfect tense before they see this.
I would suggest a little bit of modelling to begin with i.e. take them through the sentence forms which go form left to right. You could use mini white boards to build up, practise and reinforce the sentences.
I will be using this with Y9,10, 11
I hope this is useful to my fellow German teachers.
