This lesson has recently been updated for 2026, and students will spend the first part following the journey of a student called Katey, as she tries to gain a position in the tech industry. They will follow her from Year 8, how she prepared, worked hard and overcame setbacks up until the age of 22, when she finally lands a job at a small start-up.
Students will then think about their own journeys, before completing job interview role play exercises and finally creating a TikTok (not on their phones) about how preparation for their eventual successful job interview actually starts now, whilst still at school,

This is the cover letter I used for a successful job application for the position of Assistant Headteacher. It demonstrates how to construct a personal statement using middle leadership skills, experiences and CPD, linking each of these to the progress of students. This resource is also part of my Assistant Head job personal statement bundle, which includes this document, advice on how to be successful at the interview tasks and the common questions used at Assistant Head interviews. Two of the 5 resources in the bundle have an audio voice over with important advice from a Headteacher’s perspective, about how to be successful when applying for an Assistant Head position. I also have my husband come in each year and interview the children. I give them similar interview questions ahead for talk homework . I work with upper ks2 children, so not necessarily applicable or possible for everyone.

An hour long employability skills / careers lesson which was focuses on the best ways we can present ourselves to potential new employers, both in the interview and on paper. It also goes through how to write a cover letter for a job application.
This pack includes a detailed PowerPoint, information pack, differentiated activities, clips tasks with questions and a literacy / debate focus task. These resources have been designed to be engaging, detailed and easy to follow.
