Part of a series of activity sheets that take students through the formal elements of art. In this activity sheet, students are introduced to the element of shape. This is designed for KS3 students in yrs 7 and 8, but may be suitable for other ages, depending on ability. Students will learn the difference between geometric and organic shapes and create a paper collage and negative space drawing, referring to the work of the artist Matisse. This activity sheet can be printed, but has been designed so it can be followed purely on screen too. Students will need paper, colour paper, a pencil, scissors and glue to complete the activities.
The elements of art are the building blocks of an artwork: colour, line, shape, form, value, texture, and space. They are the tools artists use when creating an artwork. Each of these art fundamentals are closely related and many of them overlap. When combined, they produce a complete artistic vision.

In this unit we will learn about the different Elements of Art. The elements of art are the building blocks of an artwork: colour, line, shape, form, value, texture, and space. They are the tools artists use when creating an artwork. Each of these art fundamentals are closely related and many of them overlap. When combined, they produce a complete artistic vision.
We will communicate our understanding of these elements of art by working collaboratively to create an Elements of Art Poster. We will explore what 7 key elements are and how these elements make up and create a sense of space in the picture in combination with the principles of design to create a piece of artwork.
These are the skills you will be able to do by the end of the unit:
Identify the 7 elements of art
Use a variety of materials to demonstrate your understanding of the elements
Work collaboratively in a team to create a poster demonstrating the different elements of art and their key characteristics
