Here are some of activities I have made linked to the book ‘The Explorer’ by Katherine Rundell. One is linked to chapter 4; writing a creative poem about the strange living things in the Amazon Rainforest. Another activity is to complete a character study after reading up to chapter 5; pupils must sort the statements based on what they know about the four children. There is also an activity to complete after reading up to chapter 11 when they discover a map.

Full lesson PowerPoint with 3 differentiated worksheets for exploring the 4 ghosts in A Christmas Carol.
Includes carefully selected extracts and a table for students to plan their analytical responses.
Also including some example high level analytical paragraphs about the 4 ghosts and how they help to transform Scrooge.
An engaging, super clear 40 slide powerpoint which takes a class through the theme of ambition in ‘Macbeth’.
There are plenty of opportunities for short, focused activities by the students to help consolidate skills of language analysis and writing about context. The lesson finishes with an exam question, using an extract from Act 3, with a detailed plan showing how to tackle a GCSE essay.
There are sample responses and indicative content throughout.
This is suitable for the AQA exam board but can easily be adapted for other exam boards.
It has worked really well in the classroom, taking between 1-2 hours depending on how much writing you want your students to complete.
Y5/6 narrative writing unit on the Explorer by Katherine Rundell, producing a diary entry from Fred’s perspective of the plane crash.
Great introduction to The Explorer, beginning with offering predictions on the book using inference, to writing characters thoughts and feelings, then a diary entry.
Model included.
Very visual, pictures etc.
This lesson is part of Exploring Brazil, a Geography unit designed for students in KS2 (Y4-6), but can also be taught as a stand alone lesson.
The presentation introduces students to Brazil’s six main biomes including the tropical rainforest, caatinga (desert), Pantanal wetlands, cerrado (savannah) and Atlantic Forest. Students then read an information text to find out more.
In the activity, students write an information text about Brazil’s ecosystems. This can either be done as a short activity or as an extended write in Literacy. (N.B. The activity sheets need to be enlarged to A3 size to provide adequate space for writing.)
Short Activity:
Easier – Students match statements to each ecosystem and write them in each box.
Medium – Students add titles, then match statements to each ecosystem and write them in each box.
Harder – Students add titles and write their own sentences about each ecosystem in the box.
Extension – Students label the different ecosystems on the map, including drawings of animals found in each one.
Extended Writing Activity:
Easier – Students write an information text about Brazil’s ecosystems, including an introductory paragraph.
Harder – Students write an information text about Brazil’s ecosystems, including sub-headings and an introductory paragraph.

This is an extremely dense 12 page booklet with easily an entire scheme of work. This has been created to give year 7 an introduction to Shakespeare: to understand his life, works, times, theatre and to grasp how a script works. There are two pages which focus on Shakespeare’s villains (Don John and Iago) but in reality this is to simply expose students to Shakespeare’s life and characters rather than to complete in depth analysis of a plot and character. Although this was created with year 7 in mind it would fill a gap at any level of Key Stage 3 if students’ knowledge of Elizabethan England is lacking.
Both the editable Word document and .pdf are provided - please note the word document may not appear like the booklet pdf because of font use and formatting.
This booklet is also available as part of a Shakespeare bundle with two other KS3 booklets covering Shakespeare heroes and the idea of tragic heroes and Shakespeare’s relationships.
The booklet is as follows:
1 - front cover and basic dramatic terminology glossary
2 - William Shakespeare information with space to create a fact file
3 - Shakespeare’s works - basic information, followed by a task to understand the difference between comedies, tragedies and histories then sorting key plays into each type
4+5 - a double page spread with a timeline across Elizabethan and Jacobean England. At the top students can create a timeline of historical events and then plot Shakespeare’s life underneath (perhaps using page 2)
6 - Elizabethan entertainment - 4 boxes for students to complete information about bear baiting, bull baiting, cock fighting and the theatre - I have attached the factfile made to accompany this lesson.
7- The Globe Theatre - A label the Globe picture followed by a gap fill about its history (in image)
8- Understanding a script - the first scene of Macbeth is used to explain the layout of a script, followed by a gap underneath for students to make their own mini script using a similar layout and features.
9- Stage directions- a list of common Shakespeare stage directions with definitions for students to match followed by some complex stage directions to "translate"
10 - An explanation of the character and his motives, an extract from the play (1.3) and a series of questions which track students through the extract.
11 - An explanation of the character and his motives,an extract from 1.1 alongside a modern translation followed by a series of questions.
12- a common words glossary where students should independently record new words learnt.
Introducing a fantastic creative study tool for the critically acclaimed play, “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller - a set of character exploration sheets designed to help students deepen their understanding of the themes, characters, and plot of the book.
This resource is perfect for both English and Drama lessons studying the play or the novel. Your pupils can use the text to help them fill in the character posters for the key characters in the play.
Alternatively, you can print this out on A3/A2 paper and use this to make a class display.

This resource is part of Tropical Rainforests, a Geography unit designed for students in KS2, but can also be taught as a stand alone lesson. All resources are compatible with both Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
This lesson is a great introduction to the world’s largest rainforest, the Amazon. First, the presentation introduces students to the Amazon and its incredibly biodiverse flora and fauna. It then goes on to look at the geography of the Amazon in more detail, specifically its location within the continent of South America.
The activity challenges students to identify a range of human and physical geographical features within South America, including the nine countries in which the Amazon rainforest is located.
In follow up extension activities, students identify the capitals of those countries and then complete a cloze-procedure paragraph about the Amazon.
