This colourful printable booklet includes ten learning sessions spread over twenty pages. You could also just print a couple of pages from this workbook to create a worksheet for an instant video-learning lesson: ideal for cover lessons! This teaching resource is designed for GCSE History and deals with topics relating the ‘Restoration England, 1660–1685’ section of the AQA exam specification. The workbook is suitable for other exam specifications but I used the AQA specification’s topic titles so you may wish to re-word the title slightly. The workbook includes links to ten different documentaries or lengthily videos and straight-forward note-taking and comprehension activities so as to structure and foster engagement with the documentary whilst enhancing student learning. The twenty-page workbook was designed with homework in mind and contains ten different homework sessions. I have not included questions on the Historical Site as this will change with each year; however, I have created two interpretation questions on the Fire and Plague that fit the model used by AQA. This resource was designed for the new AQA History GCSE unit: Restoration England, 1660-1685; however, it would be suitable for any topic on classical/baroque architecture. All images have been sourced from WikiCommons and are Open Access files. Students can be given the set of images at the beginning of the lesson and must separate them into two piles without any prior knowledge (one interior and three exterior per style). The teacher can then go through the PowerPoint explaining the differences between the two styles, before the students rearrange their images based on this new knowledge. They can then stick these on to two pages in their books with the comparison table, labelling the key features on the photos.

Using the glossary from the text book (and wider understanding) students will need to identify the definitions of 10 key words at a time. These quizzes would be great as a lesson started every 3-4 weeks as new terms are introduced. A larger test could then be put together towards the end of the unit to ensure that students are familiar. I would encourage students to go away and find the definitions for themselves using the text book/internet, as this would make a great homework activity.

Students will learn about the perceived (and actual) causes of the plague and will explore the methods used by government, apothecaries and everyday people to cure it. They can then go away and learn about the impact that the plague had on London and England as a whole.

A set of 22 revision dominoes for the new AQA GCSE unit: Restoration England, 1660-1685. This is really useful as a starter activity as students move closer to the exam (or at the end of the unit) - hand one domino to each pupil and have them read out the date, the pupil with the corresponding event reads this out and then reads out their date. This should start a chain reaction around the room. My class always want to beat their time! There are perhaps more events and dates that can be added; however, this is a useful starting point.

A one-page fact file on Sir Christopher Wren to be used as part of the new AQA GCSE topic: Restoration England, 1660-1685. This resource is intended to supplement the information in the Hodder text book. A lesson/homework activity could be to set comprehension questions based on the fact file or to ask students to find out more information using the internet. Another idea is to split the room into two and have a debate as to who had a greater impact on Restoration culture, Wren or Robert Hooke (see other fact file). This is not intended to be comprehensive; it is simply a succinct summary for students that need to be stretched beyond the information in the text book.
