Punnett Square Walk through Practice

(0)
I created this worksheet as a support sheet for students struggling with drawing Punnett squares in the genetics topic. This worksheet is best printed off on A3 and works to walk students through the steps involved in determining the alleles of the parents and creating a Punnett square to determine the probability of certain outcomes. The layout is in a style that allows students to easily follow the process. Have used a similiar format in the past on calculation style questions in physics and drawing ionic bonds in chemistry and students loved it! I have also included the answer sheet to go with it.

Biology: punnett square problems and interpretation of pedigree charts

(2)
This resource contains two double sided problem sheets (and answers). The first is a series of punnet square focused problems and the 2nd asks students to interpret and answer questions from two pedigree charts. Both also contain some short answer questions. It will suit students who have not studied Genetics before. Key words: homozygous, heterozygous, dominant, recessive, punnet squares, zygote, chromosomes, pedigree charts. Thank you to everyone that bought this resource. If you get a spare 2 minutes could you leave some feedback? It is the only way I will know whether it meets your needs or what I might need to do to develop it further. My students want me to make up some more similar-styled worksheets, which I will load in the near future.

Making Babies with Punnett Squares

(0)
In the BabyMaker activity, students begin by identifying their own genetic traits, answering a series of questions about their facial features. As they input their phenotype, an animated cartoon representation of themselves as a baby is created. Students then randomly generate a second baby to “cross” with, and proceed to create new generations of babies by filling in Punnett Squares and by reading probabilities of expressed traits from Punnett Squares that are filled in for them. If they make a mistake, their babies might be missing a body part! This activity was heavily inspired by a paper-based activity from Cheryl Massengale. For Google Docs links, please visit https://www.ctlessons.org/science/making-babies.html This lesson is centered around my BabyMaker web app: https://www.ctlessons.org/apps/babymaker.html Topics addressed: Genetics – Punnett Squares, phenotypes, genotypes, traits, genomes Primary CT concept: algorithmic thinking. To fill out a Punnett Square is to be the “computer” performing the correct algorithm, taking the input (the alleles of each baby) and creating the output (the probability matrix for the new baby’s trait). Students will be able to: Complete Punnett Squares given two sets of traits Predict the likelihood of a trait being expressed given its Punnett Square Prep: This activity assumes your students have already been taught how to fill out and read Punnett Squares – it is a practice tool, not a teach-for-the-first-time tool. Suggested lesson breakdown: 5min – walk through the activity end-to-end in front of your class, showing how they select their own traits and how they both fill out and read the Punnett Squares using the handout 25-40min – students work independently in BabyMaker. If students don’t finish all five generations of their baby before the end of class, they can easily submit their high score at any point, no matter how far they got. Encourage accuracy over speed! This product includes a set of Cornell notes, an activity, a 29 slide presentation (PDF and not editable), and a mini quiz built into the presentation on Punnett squares, which is part of my Heredity Unit Bundle. This lesson covers the following topics: • Punnett squares • Steps to complete a Punnett squares (great practice for following procedures!) • Genotype • Phenotype • Trait ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ Product Details: Warm-ups: Two true or false statements are provided to identify what students know, what they think they know, and what they will learn. The warm-ups are built into the presentation with the answers provided towards the end of the lesson. Cornell notes: There are three versions–filled, filled with standards blank, and fill-in-the-blank. There are essential questions. Notes are completed by following along with the presentation. There are five criteria to the Cornell notes: header, student notes, main idea drawings, summary, and student-derived question (Depths of Knowledge). Presentation: Presentation guides direct instruction as students follow along and complete their Cornell notes. Presentation revisits anticipation guide statements from the beginning of the lesson and at the end (serves as warm-up), has a built-in mini quiz at the end of the lesson to check for understanding (5 multiple choice questions students answer on the back of their notes), pictures to help learn the material, and starter sentences to complete a summary answering essential questions/learning target (differentiated instruction). Activity: An activity follows the Cornell notes in order to support and reinforce students’ understanding of the content and provide students an opportunity to think critically by creating something new with the input received from the notes. There are five criteria: written portion, art, color, reflection, and an “excellent" component to encourage students to do a quality piece of work.
