Adding and Subtracting Fractions Bar Modelling

(0)
I shared this class once a week with another teacher and needed a worksheet that used bar modelling as this is how she taught them to do fractions (which I think is amazing). I found the pupils started to develop a good understanding of what they were doing when they were adding and subtracting fractions when they could see the parts being broken up. I used it with a low/mid-ability class. The worksheet is scaffolded with a few for them to try without boxes at the end.

Sharing with ratios - bar modelling

(9)
A (fast paced) FULL LESSON on sharing and comparing with ratios using with bar modelling and fractions. Assumed prior knowledge: Converting between metric measures. Fractions of amounts. We are learning about: Sharing with ratios. We are learning to: Use ratios to compare and share amounts. Differentiated objectives: Developing learners will be able to share an amount into a given ratio. Secure learners will be able to use a ratio to compare given amounts and totals. Excelling learners will be able to solve unfamiliar problems using their knowledge of using ratios to compare and share amounts. Starter: Express ratios as 1:n. Match up equivalent ratios (standard shade in the grid activity). Main: 2 examples: (Ex1) finding fractions and ratio in simplest form, (Ex2) Bar modelling to share ratio. Standard questions on sharing amounts with bar model provided. Two more examples: comparing amounts using the bar model. Worded questions increasing in difficulty (with solutions). Plenary: Combining a:b and b:c to a:b:c. Extra: Booklet with all questions provided as worksheet to stick in books. Any feedback is appreciated!

Ratio with Bar Models. This animated PowerPoint can be used as part of a mastery style curriculum such as the White Rose Maths Secondary Scheme or to complement any secondary maths scheme. It has been written to lead students through using bar models to solve more complex ratio problems found in KS3 and KS4. Key words have been highlighted throughout in blue and all worksheets are also provided separately as a pdf for ease of printing. Please also look out for a separate resource called “problem solving with bar models”. It takes this resource to the next level. I hope you find it useful :-)
