A literacy lesson for Key Stage 3 in which pupils practise their use of suffixes. This will test pupils prior knowledge of suffixes and how to recognise and use them within creative writing. This focuses on using an autobiography, Going Solo by Roald Dahl, to support.

Going Solo (Roald Dahl’s Autobiography, 2) by  Roald Dahl (1986) The worksheet consists of an information text. Based on this text, there are various exercises such as matching tasks, multiple-choice questions, open questions and true-false questions. You receive the material and solutions in PDF format for easy printing and in docx format for individual customization.

This lesson plan for older students is a close analysis of the features of suspense writing in Roald Dahl's autobiographical story Going Solo, which is the sequel to the acclaimed Boy: Tales of Childhood.

UPDATE NOV: added Dahl resources. A unit of work and worksheets I made for children to analyse and produce an 'Oompa Loompa' song based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This also has drama / dance links! A truly unique lesson idea you won't find anywhere. Please note these are resources to write lyrics to a tune plus lots of other extras, mostly Literacy based. I have now included the backing track (Karaoke version to the original tune.) Developed as a response to PIe Corbetts 'Talk for Writing' and the encouragement that children should leave their year group having been exposed to a variety of quality writers, genres and with a bank of stories in their head that they can draw from. Teachers sometimes choose to use a text in their literacy teaching, it may be stimulus for other subjects or just a class read, but we are encouraging that they read the books on their list throughout the year. The list was developed with the teachers and teaching assistants contributions and discussed with staff.
