Crime in the Late Middle Ages [#7] An exploration of new crimes and punishments during the Late Middle Ages, adapted for the Pearson Edexcel GCSE (9-1) Paper 1 - Thematic Study w/ Historic Environment. Overview: Students will explore the new laws introduced in the aftermath of the Black Death; a period of destruction and uncertainty. Specifically, students will look at the Statute of Labourers and Heresy Laws, with a focus on the crimes created by these laws, and the punishments. This lesson precedes a lesson on the evolving justice system in Medieval England. Suitability: Designed for Key Stage 4 (Years 10 – 11), but highly suitable for upper-KS3. There are ‘model’ teacher completed sheets for the first two A3 sheets which should act as a guide for what can/should be achieved with these resources. Students can complete tasks from memory, using class notes, the Pearson or Hodder textbooks, or online flashcards. Introduction lesson for students studying Edexcel (could be tweaked for other exam boards) medicine in Britain. Engaging starter activity with higher level challenge questions. Focus on chronology and key concepts crucial to this course - chronology differences between ideas about the cause of disease/prevention/treatment, continuity & change and factors affecting change. Overview of medicine from the Medieval-Modern period. Students create a timeline and use a card sort to get an overview of key medical developments in each period. They then sort the information to show whether the development is linked to ‘ideas’ ‘preventions’ or ‘treatments’. The work sheet called ‘continuity and change sheet’ allows students to track continuity/change in medicine and introduces them to the idea of factors affecting change. They use the information from the card sort to complete this independently. Progress check questions included in the powerpoint presentation. 2 different options for plenary.

Attached are 4 power points I wrote, that informs students on the structure of the Edexcel GCSE History unit exam papers: Superpower Relations and the Cold War, Elizabethan England, Weimar and Nazi Germany and Medicine Through Time. I have also included on the the powerpoint slides some example answers as well as advice on how to construct good answers. Mark schemes are also included. As a non specialist and working independently, I found these useful when guiding my students into making their own well constructed answers. I also made these available for revision and past paper practice at home. I hope they are useful for any other non specialists.
