Natural Selection of Bird Beaks Galapagos Game for Evolution Lessons

This is a fun game I designed for my Year 8 students to help them understand how natural selection works, but it can be used just as well at GCSE. All instructions are included in the Powerpoint alongside a spreadsheet for results and tables for student results. I have used this with classes of all abilities and it has helped a lower ability Year 8 set answer GCSE level questions.

Hand drawn and written revision pages for all B1 topics for the AQA course, easily adapted to other specifications or updated with new names. Worked really well with my bottom set Year 10s as an 'if nothing else' revision tool!

Explaining Adaptations and Mutations using Cake Analogy KS3 KS4

I’ve really enjoyed working through this sheet with my students, especially my Year 8’s, as they really enjoy hearing that they’ve completed a piece of work that includes some A-level knowledge! Using the cake analogy means that students understand what’s going on, even if they don’t know the A-level information needed to understand why. Two worksheets are included, one where I had spent the whole lesson on the work linked to cancer (students then completed a lesson from the Cancer Research site), and a second where I instead linked the mutations to adaptations.

The Ghost Map Cholera Riddle and Map Game

I designed this riddle to get my KS3 students using co-ordinates and solving puzzles rather than just being given the answers. The Foundation version requires less map work and focusses on analysis, the higher version focusses on students following the discoveries of Joghn Snow exactly as he would have done. A great lesson and homework fro key stage 3 or 4.

Meiosis Lesson Reconstruction of Events from a Story AQA GCSE Biology Inheritance

This lesson was used in my last inspection. It’s designed to encourage students to listen to what’s happening in a story and then reconstruct the stages of meiosis as a drawing. The teacher describes each stage in the story (mine loved it being taken as primary school style story time!) and the students recreate as best as possible. Completed diagrams included alongside practice questions and mark scheme, and a PowerPoint to support.
