This detailed multiplication lesson plan was for an internal observation and led to me being awarded the grade ‘Outstanding’.
It is based around a theme of aliens writing a letter to the class to ask for help in organising their sports day, and it is differentiated five ways.
The most confident mathematicians in the class will be using arrays to help them understand the concept of multiplication by partitioning, while the least able mathematicians use cubes to understand multiplication as ‘groups of’ numbers.
Five KS2 literacy lessons for Anti-Bullying Week 2017.
This week of clearly structured, differentiated literacy lessons encourages children to consider issues and themes related to bullying whilst practising speaking and listening skills and exploring and producing a range of different genres of writing.
They are ideal for Years 4, 5 and 6.
One lesson enables children to produce a high-quality descriptive diary entry. The plan is differentiated three ways and includes a learning objective, success criteria, a starter, a sample diary entry to model on the board (with tips on how to engage the class during the teacher input) and a plenary. It also includes a writing frame to enable lower ability writers to access the lesson and produce their own diary entry.
The drama lesson plan encourages pupils to explore the thoughts and feelings of people involved in bullying using dramatic techniques.
It includes a learning objective, success criteria, a starter with individual and paired activities and then a mixed ability group drama activity which draws on a dramatic technique to encourage children to fully get into the role and mind set of their character, and then peer assessment. The plenary is designed to generate a word bank for use in the other lessons.
The letter writing lesson encourages empathy and solidarity with victims of bullying and enables pupils to produce a high-quality letter written to a victim of bullying.

The leaflet writing lesson This enables pupils to write an informative advice leaflet to help victims of bullying. It includes a learning objective, differentiated success criteria, links to differentiated resources and a plenary.
The poetry writing lesson involves children reading and discussing examples of powerful and emotive (age appropriate) anti-bullying poetry, before helping the teacher to write a model poem on the board and then writing their own individual poems.
It includes a learning objective, success criteria, starter and plenary as well as an example model for the teacher two write and three example poems for higher ability children, two for middle ability children and two for lower ability children.
The lessons can be taught in any order as each is a stand alone lesson, so you can see which order best suits your timetable.
This primary school assembly is on Resilience - one of the core values being promoted by many primary schools across the country.
It has a PowerPoint presentation with animations, a video clip, a song option and a choice of Christian prayer or non-religious reflection.
It also includes a full separate page of notes on Word to give ideas of what to say while showing each slide.
I gave this assembly at my own primary school and had several children and teachers coming up to me in the corridors afterwards to tell me how much they had enjoyed the assembly (honestly!)
This outstanding lesson is cross curricular and can be used for history, RE or literacy lessons. I received an 'outstanding' grade from my head teacher for this lesson and she was unable to think of anything at all I could improve about it.
Children learn about conditions in Nazi concentration camps, find out about the actions of some of the people who helped Jews during the Holocaust and then use what they have learned to write an emotive letter.
The lesson plan includes a model letter for the teacher to write on the board as an example, and ideas for higher level questioning. It also includes a very effective reflective plenary.

This complete upper KS2 literacy lesson centres around children writing a newspaper report about the forthcoming celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee.

Children learn to visualise folding nets into 3D shapes, with differentiated fun and easy to mark/assess activities, including an open-ended extension.
I was really pleased with this lesson and the head at the time awarded me 'Outstanding' for it.

This structured eight lesson literacy plan moves children from looking at the way speech is used in stories to how it forms the basis of play scripts.
They will examine the difference in the structure and punctuation of dialogue used in different kinds of writing, learning how to make comparisons, and use what they have learnt to create their own plays.
They will then work in groups to consider how the dialogue could be read/performed to best effect.

I have not been observed teaching this particular lesson but I have received an Outstanding grade for all literacy observations in the last few years from my head teacher as well as more senior outside observers.
This journalism literacy lesson is differentiated three ways and is designed to inspire pupils to write a structured newspaper report about the armistice at the end of the First World War (as if it was going to be published on the evening of 11/11/1918).
It has a learning objective and differentiated success criteria.
It begins by showing children two video clips with scenes of jubilation as people across Europe celebrated the end of the war, and then explains the structure of a news story with an example to discuss before they begin their individual task of creating a news story.
Lower ability children have pre-prepared statements to order and link with connectives, while middle pupils write their own story. Higher achieving pupils include extra facts from a fact sheet using subordinate clauses.
At the end of the lesson, children complete a self-assessment plenary.
I am an Year 6 class teacher who has been rated outstanding in all recent observations, and I am also an NCTJ qualified senior newspaper reporter who has worked on several local and national titles.

This is the writing frame to enable lower ability writers to produce a descriptive diary entry from the viewpoint of a victim of bullying.

This Year 4 multiplication lesson plan, which is based around the theme of the newly-released film The Incredibles 2, is definitely best used as part of the bundle I have created, which includes the PowerPoint and worksheets referred to in the plan.
The lesson includes a clear learning objective, success criteria, an oral/mental counting starter, vocabulary list, teacher input, three-way differentiated independent work, a plenary and a self assessment opportunity.
After the starter, children are shown a letter from The Incredibles family, asking for their help to defeat evil and save the Supers. There is an animated PowerPoint for the teacher to model the method that will be used during the lesson, and then children work independently to answer their own multiplication questions, each of which helps the Supers with a problem based on the film’s storyline.
Lower ability children can use a multiplication square to calculate 2 digit x 1 digit, while middle and higher ability children use their times table knowledge to calculate 3 and 4 digits x 1 digit.
NB If you have a higher ability set and would like to give them more of a challenge, I have adapted this lesson for Year 5 (starting to multiply by 2 digits) - please see separate bundle.
