This is an 8/9 lesson unit using the Pixar short: La Luna to stimulate a range of short burst writing activities. Lessons included focus on setting descriptions, diary writing and instructional writing. Each outcome uses the film to support children. There are a range of resources included. A detailed PowerPoint with all lessons and notes where needed, a talk for writing text and story map on instructions, widgits to support with vocabulary, pictures to order and retell and modelled texts. This is a great resource for children in KS1 and short burst activities keep children fully engaged. This planning can easily be adapted to teach LKS2 children as recapping different genres of writing. A story retell could also be included.

3 week planning No-Bot the Robot with no bottom KS1 English

This resource has been created to be completed over 3 weeks (15 sessions). It uses the text ‘No-Bot the Robot with no Bottom’ by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet with the outcome being that children innovate the story for their own robot to lose a different body part and have different problems. The resource pack includes planning through the PowerPoint with all 15 sessions, notes are included on slides to support teaching and outcome. There is a focus on speech and using inverted commas, different sentence forms, as well as an introduction to the story mountain structure. There are detailed resources for each session where needed, vocabulary support through widgits, story map, innovated story map, box up plan & pictures for sequencing activities. There is an inclusion of mixed VIPERS questions to support the prediction of the story. This resource has predominantly been used for Year 2 children, however, it is also a great text to start LKS2. Children are also given the time to orally retell and perform their innovated story.

2 Week KS1: Persuasive letter writing to unban Pokémon cards from school

(0)
This is a 2 week unit looking at features of persuasive letter writing for children to plan and write their own persuasive letters to the headteacher to allow Pokemon cards in school. This unit works well with children in Year 2, who have already been introduced to letter writing and features. Teaching and learning focuses on children exploring Pokemon cards, creating a Top Trump card using descriptive language, letter features, persuasive language, rhetorical questions and discussions and debates on the pros and cons of allowing Pokemon cards in school. This unit could be used at the beginning of LKS2 and could be adapted for Year 1. This resource includes all lesson planning through PowerPoint with notes at the bottom, a modelled persuasive letter and resources to describe and create Pokemon Top Trumps cards (which could then be shrunk and photocopied for children to have a class set.) There is time given for children to edit and improve their letters, write them up and send them to the headteacher.

3 Week English Plan KS1 A Mouse Called Julian by Joe Todd-Stanton

I have designed 3 weeks English planning (15 sessions) planning and engaging resources based on ‘A Mouse Called Julian’ by Joe Todd-Stanton. The outcome being that children create their own adventure narrative with an opening, build up, problem, solution and ending. Resources include all PowerPoints for 3 weeks. Display vocabulary, word banks, sequencing, planning templates and story maps. There are also differentiated activities for LA children. There are also key questions to support Guided reading during the first read of the story focusing on mixed VIPERS skills. Notes are included in the ppt to support teaching. I linked this to arctic animals as this was cross curricular with Science and History explorers, however, this could be adapted to suit another topic if necessary. I have used these plans with Year 2 but they could be adapted to suit LKS2 or Y1 too.

I have designed a 3 week writing (15 sessions) planning and resources based on ‘Stuck’ by Oliver Jeffers. The outcome being that children innovate and write their own narrative of an item that gets stuck in a different location. Resources include word banks, sequencing activities, grammar looking at the past tense, short burst writing activities of a diary entry and a missing poster, a story map and planning through using PowerPoint. I have used these plans with KS1, but they could easily be adapted for Recepion or LKS2. There are also colourful semantic starters included to support children writing in full sentences.

Non-fiction Mixed up Minibeasts

I created and used this planning towards the end of Year 2 to gather more evidence of non-fiction writing based on fictional creatures. This is a short 2 week unit where children invent their own mixed up minibeast, make it, describe it’s appearance, habitat and diet using a modelled text about monsters. Included are the teaching ppts, the modelled text and a checklist for what children should include in each section as well as vocabulary banks to support children with tier 3 vocabulary. I also linked this to Science, Art (children made their minibeasts using clay) and also to creating poems about the children’s mixed up minibeasts. This is a great, short unit, especially if more evidence is required for students.

I have created a unit using the text ‘How to wash a woolly Mammoth’ by Michelle Robinson and Kate Hindley. The outcome is to create a set of innovated instructions of washing a different animal. This unit focuses on recapping the features of instructions, imperative verbs and adverbs. It is great used near the end of Year 2 or would be suitable for the beginning of LKS2. Animals can be changed and linked to other topics being covered if needed. This pack contain planning with notes on the PowerPoint, a modelled text, box up plan and animal planning sheet, as well as a verb and adverb game.
