The (uneven) development game

(0)
1 hour lesson for KS3 and KS4 geography classes. The lesson begins with a game that highlights the different barriers to development across a range of African countries. The end result is a deeper understanding of the human and physical causes of uneven development in Africa/across the world. Students work in pairs and have a country card between them. They all begin with the same amount of tokens. The teacher reads out statements which will affect countries differently, meaning they can either gain or lose tokens. After the game there is opportunity for discussion and reflection. The second half of the lesson is an independent consolidation activity on the human and physical factors affecting development in Africa. All resources apart from the tokens are included, all instructions are on the notes of the powerpoint. There is a template country card slide if you want to add your own countries to the game

This game is designed to be taught as part of a KS3 geography unit on Africa, but it is appropriate for students studying development too. It focuses on the physical and human barriers to development for some African countries. The game is designed to draw attention to the uneven nature of development and introduce the different barriers and setbacks that some countries face. The resource includes the lesson powerpoint and a word document with the country cards and game statements. All game instructions are in the notes on the ppt. There is a template slide if you want to add your own countries too. The game and reflection should take about 30 minutes, and then the consolidation activity can be done for the remaining 30 minutes.
