I also find that it is a good tool for introducing real words that are unfamiliar to the children, which can be a great point of discussion, as sometimes the children can classify real words as nonsense because they haven’t come across them before. This resource has been created for children to work on independently during Guided Reading sessions. The different activities aim to develop a range of reading skills. It is best used when children have a good range of books accessible at their reading level. It is important to choose books that would work for the task, i.e. non-fiction for the Fact Hunt sheet or books with certain digraphs for the Sound Hunt sheet. Adults would then work directly with guided groups on a learning objective/focus, while the others were engaged independently. This resource is suitable for KS1 but can be used with KS2 if appropriate. Top Tip: I group the children according to their reading level, book band or book shelf. I then select a range of books from a level they would be comfortable reading. This is how I use this resource, however please feel free to use it however you like! You might prefer to use it as part of an intervention.
