Knife Crime

(0)
An interactive session designed for KS4 and 16+ learners on the topic of knife crime. This session is designed to last roughly 30 minutes but can be easily adapted to different durations via the debate prompts. Learning aims: To understand why some young people feel the need to carry knives To examine the impact that knife crime has on people and society To learn about different responses to the issue (and how we can deal with it) The presentation contains links which may not function properly on Powerpoint. If the video does not play automatically, use the link on the last page. For best results, open in Canva. Though the presentation does not feature any overtly graphic material, sensitivity and discretion are advised, given the nature of the subject. When teaching this session, I ask students to write about their aspirations on a piece of paper a s a starter. Once collected, I begin to rip some of these papers up at random, to demonstrate how quickly life can be taken away. This proved to be an impactful segue into the topic, emphasising the potential consequences of knife crime.

Gothic Literature Extended Project - EFL for Spanish Speakers (B2+)

This pack contains resources for the delivery of a fun and engaging extended cultural project for native Spanish speakers learning English as a foreign language at intermediate and upper-intermediate level. In this exciting topic, students will work together to write and narrate their own pieces of creative writing in the Gothic style, building their confidence and command of the English language in the process. I taught this topic to students ranging from 1º ESO to 4º ESO (KS3-4) in Spain, to great effect. Students of all abilities enjoyed and enthusiastically engaged with the content. Learning Objectives: For students to develop their descriptive language, particularly relating to places and people For students to develop their narrative expression and storytelling, particularly in the past tense For students to engage with and build an appreciation for different literary styles For students to develop their confidence in speaking, by narrating a story with expression and emotion The topic can be stretched out over 4-5 lessons, ideally culminating in students sharing their original creative writing pieces. Given the challenge of the project, it is recommended that students work in groups. There is plenty of room for differentiation with this topic. For my younger or less proficient students, I tasked them to write a short chapter, instead of a full story, or for others, to to write out a detailed, descriptive passage about a character or setting. For assessment, feel free to use my free assessment rubric, found on my resource shop

The presentation will take the groups through the month, starting with them having to find a new place to live and facing the costs that go with moving. Students will then have to make shopping lits of household essentials, food, etc. The lesson is fairly open-ended and can be adapted easily for different lesson durations and for learners of varying ages and abilities.
