Ideally, this is group work as it is important children are discussing their opinions aloud. The activity worksheet has the propaganda pictures and spaces for children to write their answers depicting what they think the main message of the poster is, and why might the government had wanted to communicate this. A dive deeper challenge is provided too: to design their own poster for one of these war messages. Atlases to be provided, or printed out maps of the UK cities and UK counties (or a mixture of both) What this lesson is about: Main learning objective: Where were children evacuated from and to during WW2? The PowerPoint explores: A starter activity to gather thoughts around a photo of children shielding from a bomb Description of what evacuation was, including images and videos to support Description of Operation Pied Piper Explanation of the activity The activity: The purpose of the activity is to explore the counties and cities which WW2 children were evacuated to. Using maps provided (either atlases or printed out maps), the task is to colour code some of the evacuated cities and counties on their on map of the UK, and label around the map. There is a dive deeper question provided to challenge the more able thinkers: ‘Why were children evacuated from these places? The first of six lessons in this WW2 topic. What this lesson is about: Main learning objective: What were the main reasons for WW2? Additional objective as plenary: Who were the major powers and political leaders in WW2? This resource explores how WW2 came about, linking all the way back to the after effects of WW1 and how this connects. It is designed for Year 5 and Year 6 level. Slides have been created to be interactive and fun, encouraging lots of conversation from the class. It is a very complicated topic, so this lesson summarises it for the children. A plenary at the end briefly explores the Allied and Axis Powers, depicting the countries involved. This is a quick 5 minute teaching point to give children the knowledge for future lessons. The PowerPoint explores: The Treaty of Versailles Germany and Hitler’s response to this The expansion of Germany (Lebensraum) Neville Chamberlain and his policy of appeasement The invasion of Czechoslovakia and Poland The activity: An activity designed to test the children’s summary skills. A lot of information has been taught in this lesson, and so the activity is to help the children to remember the key bits of information to take away (the ‘sticky’ points). A scaffolded worksheet has been uploaded for SEND to be able to access the learning too. The PowerPoint explores: The Phoney War Summary of The Blitz with explanations around the origin of the name Videos and photographs depicting shelters, bomber planes, destruction of cities Description of difference between primary and secondary sources The activity: Using a mixture of primary and secondary resources provided, the task is to information-gather across these sources to fill in the worksheet. The worksheet has boxes provided for the children to write what they have learned about The Blitz through their research. There is an alternative scaffolded worksheet with fewer boxes to fill in, and a useful ‘word bank’ to help with key vocabulary.
