We study the sea shanty and its role in folk music, giving opportunities for pupils to learn:
About the transmission of sea shanties - through call and response
About basic primary triads, how to construct them and play them (ukulele)
How melody relates to primary triads through the use of the major scale
How to write effective melodies using chord tones and passing notes
Puplis will also be able to put their learning to the test by composing their own sea shanty!

This is a great resource to introduce pupils to the musical styles of Baroque and Rock music and explores key musical developements within the eras, such as the advent of opera.

Wild Thing - Hendrix’s Arrangement
These have been written through notation as well as lead sheets, with chord symbols for ukulele.
This resource is aimed at upper KS2 or lower KS3 year groups.
We study the musical concept of looping in its many guises - using the London Eye as a national landmark!
During this scheme of work pupils will have opportunities:
To learn what a loop is and how it can be identified in music across a range of styles
To compose and perform original pieces based on the concept of ostinato
To explore how ostinato and looping is used, both in Western Tonal Music and contemporary Pop music by exploring set works:
* Bolero - Ravel
* Canon in D - Pachelbel
* A Sky Full of Stars - Coldplay
Puplis will also be able to apply their knowledge in a practical sense by performing A Sky Full of Stars (noated with ukulele chord symbols)
This scheme of work is aimed at lower KS3 pupils, supporting them in learning all about RHYTHM and PITCH. In order to bring these musical concepts to life we use London Landmarks - The Tate Modern (Rhythm) and The Shard (Pitch).
In this scheme of work, pupils have the opportunity to:
Rhythm
Learn what rhythm is and how it is differentiated from pulse
Learn to turn sounds into symbols
Learn how to add sizzle and spice to rhythms (triplets, dotted notes etc.)
Learn about word setting and how composers make great use of rhythm to give meaning to their words
Show their learning through a practical composition and performance task: The London Underground Rap
Pitch
Learn about high and low pitches - how they are written on the treble and bass clefs
How melody is created through the mixture of pitch and rhythm by exploring exciting pieces from diverse genres
Learn about minimalism and its use of short motifs which can be developed
Apply their learning of reading pitch and rhythm via a small scale performance of In C by Terry Riley
Learn to compose their own motif for use in a minimalist piece - and how to develop their idea successfully!
