What would you do if frogs invaded your town…? A complete UKS2 newspaper writing unit based on a mysterious frog invasion, which you could personalise to your location (if desired). This engaging sequence supports pupils to write high-quality newspaper reports using clear modelling, structured scaffolds and explicit grammar teaching. There is one lesson linking this unit to David Wiesner’s ‘Tuesday’, but this is optional! You can deliver this unit without the text! Lesson 2: Writing varied sentences with prepositions as fronted adverbials. Lesson 3: Practising dialogue punctuation with the reported clause last to reveal character personality. Lesson 4: Applying all the skills in an independent character description writing task, supported by a clear success criteria for self-assessment. Includes a WAGOLL text rich with challenging vocabulary, plus a visual vocabulary slide with images to support understanding. I created and used this 5-lesson English writing unit based on The Promise by Nicola Davies with my lower KS2 class to develop descriptive writing skills and confidence. It would suit either Year 3 or Year 4. Each lesson builds the tools children need to create a full setting description by the end of the unit.
