Used Butterfly Lion as a half term unit with a mixed Y3/4 class and they loved it. Here are all the English resources I used but I also made it a cross curricular link with topics such as endangered species, WW1, Remembrance Day, South Africa etc. The resources here are English based. There's lots of them - not all mine- but the Smart notebook files are, along with exemplar word documents. Writing outcomes were : diary writing, letter writing, biographies and non fiction reports and fact files. Also drama and hot seating activities. Fits into stories from other cultures and themes in books.A beautiful book that left many children in tears, but they absolutely loved it and it led to some great cross curricular activities.

A very simple Science investigation to wow your children. Simply arrange skittles around the edge of a paper plate. If they can do it in a pattern the results will be better. Pour water on until it meets the sweets and then watch the amazing results! Word of caution - don’t let the children move the plate. What evolves is a rainbow of colour which amazes the children. Very simple, very effective and instant results. I used it as a simple experiment to improve the maturity of the science vocabulary of write ups when doing investigations. Just try it and be amazed at the results! Differentiated worksheets for write ups.

A Year 5/6 Journalistic unit of work with a Victorian theme. All activities are based around the Bryant and May Match Girl trial, culminating in a balanced argument newspaper report. After the children have become familiar with story, transform your classroom into a court and allocate children to different roles in the case. e.g Annie Beasant, Judge , Foreman, Mr Bryant etc. Using prompt sheets provided, children will re -enact the trial! My children absolutely loved it - even getting dressed up and bringing their own props. The unit culminates in the children writing their own newspaper report. Smart board resource to guide them through including an exemplar newspaper to model. A fun way to tackle a tricky non fiction genre.

Resources concerning the learning objectives; that germs can spread easily; that germs can often not be seen and the importance of hand-washing. Two simple but fun, exciting and visually stimulating investigations used to improve scientific vocabulary of interpreting results and setting out investigation write up. The first - Glitterbug Investigation- has children sat in a circle, all with a small amount of hand cream on one hand. One child smears one hand with glitter and then “high fives” around the circle to see how far the germs(glitter) spread. Included are three differentiated worksheets suitable for Y1, Y2 and Y3, with increasingly complex scientific vocabulary. The second is a teacher led soap and pepper investigation. Put water into a bowl and sprinkle pepper(the germs) into it. Ask for predictions and then ask a child to put finger in the water. Nothing happens. Then smear liquid soap on the same finger and repeat. The results are amazing as the pepper quickly moves to the outside of the bowl. A Just try it - it really works and the children are amazed!!

A fun, adaptable ppt to teach and reinforce punctuation objectives in Y3 SPAG.

Power Point resource that is easily adapted to individual needs to teach and reinforce all the punctuation objectives in Y3 SPAG.The children need to identify the given number of punctuation errors shown on the bottom of the card. This one is designed to reinforce the rules regarding direct speech but can be easily changed on a weekly basis to cover Y3 punctuation objectives throughout the year. I use it as a 15 min slot where the children pair up and rewrite the sentence on white boards with one child designated to keep score. I find the children love the competitive aspect and respond well to the police theme - especially the embedded siren music. I try to continue the theme with the children as I ask them to respond with: Constable Clark concludes that…; Sergeant Smith suggests that… Inspector Ian informs that… We have found the following punctuation crimes. Works for me. Give it a try?
