Introduction to GCSE Media Studies: Audience scheme of work

(1)
A theory based scheme of work that introduces students to the key concept of Audience. Based on the subject content of all the main GCSE exam boards, including AQA and EDUQAS, it takes students through the theoretical aspects of audience and uses practical tasks to enable them to apply their knowledge. Lesson plans cover content such as: Audience theories (including reception theory, Uses and Gratifications, hypodermic syringe, cultivation, two step flow etc) Segmentation (including demographics and psychographics) Audience research methods Methods used to measure audiences Marketing (including viral and guerrilla marketing) This scheme of work is an ideal introduction to GCSE or used as a pre-GCSE foundation course (eg. in Year 9). It links to my other schemes of work introducing the other key concepts of Media Language, Institutions and Representation. It can easily be extended by the addition of simple practical design tasks according to the ability of our group.

Introduction to GCSE Media Language Scheme of Work

A theory based scheme of work based on the Media Language units of the major exam boards, including AQA and EDUQAS. An ideal introduction to the key concept of Media Language with specific lessons on: Media Language Codes and Conventions Semiotics Textual Analysis Narrative theory Character theory Genre theory All lessons are theory based but include practical and engaging tasks to get students to apply the theory in a relevant way. The scheme of work can be extended by introducing various design tasks depending on resources available. I use this as a foundation style introduction to GCSE Media Studies for my Year 9 cohorts. There are also linked Institutions, Audience and Representations schemes of work that complement this as a complete introductionn to the GCSE key concepts.
