A scheme of lessons to prepare students for the Unseen Prose section of AQA A Level English Lit Paper 2 - ‘Texts in Shared Contexts’. The lesson format is all on these word documents which contain contextual information, academic articles, etc. etc. There are a range of tasks and questions for discussion and notes. I have found this approach of handouts works well with folder organisation and ensuring all relevant material is collected together, whilst I deliver the lessons in a seminar fashion, sitting as a group discussing/ noting together. However, the content could easily be copied into PowerPoints if that’s your preferred teaching method. There are 4 lessons although the material could easily be spread over 8, and perhaps more if you wanted students to write in class essays. Each lesson features a range of material and sources with important contextual information which ties into an unseen extract. The themes explored through the extracts are: Significance of responsibility Significance of life on the front line Significance of officers Significance of faith There are also select poems which tie to the context/ theme in the unseen extract and support students to think about AO4 typicality. There is a planning grid and home learning tasks added to each lesson, which cover pre-reading and consolidation. I have devised a simialr scheme of lessons for Gatsby and Jane Eyre too which are in my resources.

Full SOW to teach ‘My Boy Jack’ act 1. I use these sheets so that the lessons can be delivered in a seminar form - we sit around and discuss rather than delivering through a powerpoint. I also finds it helps support students with folder organisation and those who miss a lesson can simply take the print out. In general the lessons will last across 2-3 hours, depending on whether you have double lessons or not. There is a range of tasks to support reading, essay writing and analysis. Suitable for learning at home. I delivered these lessons after teaching WW1 Unseen Prose (I have this SOW available here too) so the students had quite an assured contextual basis. I also asked them to read the text across a half term and watch the film version (available on Youtube). These lessons begin by looking in depth at the context (Kipling’s pro-war poetry and recruitment speeches; Jack Cornwall in the Battle of Jutland) and then work through the play. Relevant context is included in the sheets, with a range of activities to support analysis and essay writing. All lessons contain home work tasks, both mandatory and optional extensions.

Full SOW used for a mixed ability year 9 group to develop persuasive writing skills. Focuses on speeches, letters and 'lively' articles. Introduces students to AFORESTPIE techniques and presents lots of opportunity to develop writing using a range of lively, fun lessons to appeal to all learners. Some interactive approaches to encourage debating and students to leave their seats and move around the room - from experience this works well with settling disengaged/ ADHD learners. For each lesson there is a modelled example for students to identify vocabulary and techniques, sentence starters and peer assessment structures. Some examples are differentiated and all tasks include some form of differentiation. Uses 'core, challenge, super challenge.' Ability of group ranges from 3a - 7a. Most resources already adapted for Polish & Slovak EAL students (although language ability is fairly good). Covers a whole term teaching Jane Eyre to an A level group. Each lesson has a word document the students can file in their folders, with tasks, questions, extracts to annotate, critical theory etc. All have clear learning objectives and the AOs to compound student understanding of assessment foci. The lessons are diffferentiated and designed to support E to A* level learners. Convenient to give students to complete individually in the event of absence too.

This PP covers teaching all of the 18 poems in the anthology with 490 slides and each individual poem hyperlinked for ease of finding it! Includes a range of structured writing tasks with writing frames and examples and lessons considering the novel's context, allegory, structure and characters. Highly structured with a range of tasks which are all fully differentiated. All resources are within the PP, including extracts ready to print. Any resources are at the end of each lesson. Designed in line with Eduqas new 9-1 exam but easily adapted for other boards. Students were set a HL to read the novel in advance of teaching so it is designed on the assumption students have prior knowledge of the text. Complete unit to teach the pre-1900 poetry athology on the Love through the Ages paper. I use word docs and no powerpoints to enable more of a seminar forum sitting round, discussing and noting. Powerpoints contain tasks, activties, homeworks, handouts including context and support. Personally I find his supports folder organisation and students to easily catch up missed lessons.

Full SOW to teach a selection of the poety in Scars Upon my Heart for the AQA Texts in Shared Contexts Paper. The lessons are organised thematically and cover themes of grief, changing women’s roles, home front, front line, VAD experience, propaganda, anti-war and the gulf between male and female experience. There are a range of academic articles linked to frame understanding and tasks to support critical thinking. There are essay tasks, homework and pre-reading tasks before each new lesson. Note: I teach A level in seminar fashion - I don’t use powerpoints and instead sit with the students and discuss the ideas, making notes in the top sheets which contain all handouts and info. I find this aids folder organisation and any missed lessons and ensures productivity rather than makin copious notes from a powerpoint.

This is a fully resourced, fully differentiated SOW to teach Other Side of Truth. It covers the whole text with a range of activities - reading skills (fiction/ non-fiction), writing skills (create and non-fiction) and speaking and listening. There are linked poems and context and enough lessons to cover a full 12 week term. Taught to year 7 but could be used up to year 9 as there are tasks to challenge high ability students.

Term's unit of work on Sherlock Holmes - designed for a 6 week term looking predominantly at Man with the Twisted Lip and Speckled Band. Includes a range of tasks and activities and opportunities to complete analytical writing. Differentiated using 'core, challenge, super challenge' with all resources at the end of each individual lesson in the slides. Includes an assessment task and practical lesson activities making crime scene models for the Speckled Band and a 'murder mystery' looking at the Boscombe Valley mystery. Also included in this resource is a home learning SOW with writing frames etc.

Mini SOW for y11 revising A Christmas Carol (Eduqas Englis Literature component 2). These resources are designed to be used together with students completing the revision booklet in class so that they have all information ready to revise. Revision booklet explains the exam and then has space for students make notes on each character and the context. There are extracts and practice questions at the back for each character. The PP lessons contain pictures for the students to revise the plot; summarised information on the context for students to copy down; slides to collectively revise the character; quotations for each character to annotate together before students copy down 3 of their choice into their revision guide. There are also sentence starters and a structure to support peer assessment.

Full SOW on Midsummer for a year 9 mixed ability group, although with the removal of 'core' tasks could easily be adapted for top set/ 1 groups. Suits ability range from 3a - 7a. Questions, tasks and resources are differentiated using language of 'core, challenge, super challenge' and colours red- green denote the same level of skills. Based upon students watching the film first (an end of previous term treat!) to aid understanding, but the whole text is read. There is an emphasis on terminology to support GCSE skills and modelled examples of PEE paragraphs/ sentence starters. Masks are included for a drama lesson too.
