Plantation Mystery

(12)
I generally use this with Year Nine. It is a mystery surrounding the death of a slave on a plantation. It is designed more as a thinking skills activity and to promote discussion as opposed to teaching about plantation life- I usually teach about plantation life separately.

Was Edward VI a successful monarch?

Was Edward VI a successful monarch? An activity designed to start with a good hook with Edward VI trying to be exactly like his father through to some good skills; sorting, making judgements, assessing the importance/usefulness of evidence and structuring written responses. There's also some scope for mini role play. Easily adaptable to go across two lessons if time constraints apply. Worked well with Year 7 and Year 8. Source pack can easily be adapted further although there is scope for choice and differing activities. With lower ability classes remove some of the harder sources.

Black Death Sources lesson (Paper 2)

This was a lesson I put together for an interview. It can therefore be easily extended. It is focusing on the Paper 2 end question for OCR GCSE SHP. It can also just be used as an introduction to the Black Death.

I realise there are many versions of this lesson, however, I have been adapting various ideas until I have settled upon this one. You will need to be able to get a copy of Wilfred Owen's poem Dulce et Decorum est. I usually use A5 then they can annotate around in their books. It nicely uses English, History and a bit of Drama and I have found that students respond really well to it.

1924-1929: Weimar Golden Years? Pyramid questions

Developed after seeing an example for an American West one on Twitter. Students answer the questions to fill in the bubbles to consolidate knowledge about the topic of Weimar 1924-1929. I should add that when you preview it it doesn’t look like a pyramid, but upon download it will!

Stuarts thinking quilt: recap/retrieval

Students have to place the event within one of four time periods within the OCR Unit. Then they have to identify which theme/factor the event is. Useful for retrieval and encouraging students to discuss details of events they have already studied.

Medieval Realms: Hexagon revision

This is a resource designed to use before our end of year test. It asks students to think about what they have learned and apply it to a question: “The worst thing about living in the Middle Ages was the low life expectancy.”. How far do you agree? I expanded it during online learning to include more prompts, so the sheet goes through the activity step by step.
