KS2/ KS3 EAL and SEN resource for understanding the language used in Charles Dickens 'A Christmas Carol'. One description of Scrooge is at the start of the text, the second at the end to show his transformation. I used the KOA Year 7 as an assessment, and 'Meeting Scrooge' as an introduction lesson beforehand to model how to annotate an extract.

Diary entry to help students retell the events of the text, and learn to use the diary format. I had a number of students struggle to think from other peoples/characters perspectives, so I used this as a base and then asked them to perform is as a spoken language piece, like an introduction to soliloquy. Could be used in Drama or English. Primarily for EAL and SEN KS3 students, but could be used in KS2 as well.

Developed for low-attainment GCSE students who struggle to build paragraphs based on the text. 1) Interim Assessment- FINAL= all stages of the interim assessment (given to year 10s) 2) Interim Assessment ppt = instructions and provided quotes to use for above assessment (higher ability students can do without this and find their own). 3) Practice for Interim Assessment ppt= Given to the students in class and on Edmodo to help them prepare and model responses. 4) Explode a Quote- a higher ability way to extracting information from a quote, which could be used in place of the table if need be. Letter from John Steinbeck to an actress, Miss Luce, who playing Curley's Wife in a stageplay of 'Of Mice and Men' with questions. Text has been edited to make it more appropriate for KS3, but full original text is at the bottom if you want it for KS4/ mature students. Questions are specific to certain sections, and a great way to give students an understanding of 1930's American historical context, John Steinbecks intentions as well as an insight into the sexism of the time. Really puts the text into a different light if you want students to be able to understand the subtleties of JS's intentions and criticisms of the time period.

Step by step, scaffolded instructions to ensure each student understands the requirements of the exam, as well as how to make sure valuable information is not missed. Used in practice exams and class discussions on how to maximise time in exams, based on students individual skills. Particularly useful for students with anxiety, EAL or SEN problems, or have difficulty organising themselves. Can be used as a Guide and as a Worksheet to help students divide their time appropriately. Teacher can give their own timings, or direct students to discuss what their problem areas are are therefore need more time.

For KS3 or low KS4 to assist with literal and implied meanings from two different sections of the text. Extracts from Section 2 and 5 provides, and table to fill in. Could always expand if you wanted more detail, but I found this quite useful for getting students to think more deliberately about implied meanings in the text. Powerpoint used has been provided, with specific instructions on the procedure if you have nervous/ low ability/ EAL and SEN students.
