Mission to Mars

This Mission to Mars activity was used with a low ability year 9 class, but it would also be suitable for most ages with some modification. This class worked in pairs to complete the activity, but it would work well as a group activity to encourage team work. Included in the ppt is a bell task, starter, introduction and timing guidance too. You will find the worksheets in the ppt too. The word document contains the mission briefing, mission dollars and price lists for equipment. You could keep the activity as it is, or give additional tasks to build models, consider terraformation, choosing crew members, deciding on the research the crew would carry out etc. It entirely depends on the level of challenge and how many lessons you would like to use. My year 9 class comfortably completed this activity in one, sixty minute lesson.

Problems caused by modern farming

This lesson is a standalone focusing on the issues surrounding the use of pesticides, fertiliser, biological pesticides and hedge clearance in modern farming. Included is a powerpoint presentation with a link to a BBC video clip. I have also included copies of the resource sheets to be given to each group, the Kagan based worksheet for each group, the table for all students to complete at the end of the lesson when groups share their information and a completed table for any groups who may need additional help. This was originally pitched at a high ability year 8 class but could be adapted for use for all abilities. This lesson took around 45-50 minutes to complete.

The One With The Quiz

This is a simple powerpoint that can be used for assessment or revision with smaller classes. It is based on the friends episode where the girls lose the apartment to the boys after losing the quiz that Ross sets. The topics are as they were in the episode. Personally, i've used the pet peeves category for parts of the topic i knew the students found hard and i've used literature for spellings. I've used ancient history for a bit of interleaved learning going back over old topics etc, but you can change the categories to anything you want! There are three levels of questions, with three being the most difficult. To score the points, just click the box if they get your question right. You can edit it to have the questions appear in the box, or have a sheet, as i do, with the questions on. I'll try and upload question sheets as i make them.
