Guide to 9-1 English GCSE grade descriptors display

Based on Blooms taxonomy, it is 6 sections of grade descriptors broadly aligned to the new 9-1 GCSE grades. It gives the skills and relevant parts of the assessment criteria . REALLY useful laminated and strung on thread as a hanging display and used in virtually every lesson to indicate easily how to move up to the next set of skills, with every class from year 7-11. Also works well on walls as a 'ladder' of progress. There is a matching one for READING skills!

Giant PEE task (based on 'A Midsummer Night's Dream')

Based on quotes from 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', it is a group activity for KS3 - used effectively with a set 2 y8. It has differently coloured elements of the task (a point, a relevant example/evidence, an explanation and a development), which the separate groups have to identify and organise to construct a large (5-6 sheet of A4) PEED argument which can then be used for display and revision. Several different versions included for different groups. It worked well and the class enjoyed it.

9-1 English GCSE exam practice schemelet

two lessons(ish) introducing the 9-1 English exam and exploring the assessment criteria, grade boundaries and considering SWOT. Includes an activity handout of the Assessment Criteria and broad grade descriptors for approximately grade 2/5/8 (designed to be a double sided handout) Both of these word docs and the Notebook file of the 'scheme' should be available or I will bundle' them so that they are. PLEASE NOTE: if you buy on of my other Paper 1 schemes (James and the Giant Peach, War Horse or War of the Worlds), this schemelet is included as the first few slides on the unit.

'The Skeleton' Creative Writing scheme of Work and resources for KS3

A really comprehensive scheme to establish the basics of creative writing - hence 'skeleton'. It was designed for Y7 originally - a fairly high set but they seem to be getting more and more grammar-savvy as they come up from Primary so accessible to lower sets too. I have also used it very successfully with a middle set Y9 so it is pretty adaptable! Gives a really good grounding in techniques that will last through KS3 and 4 - and can produce good display too!

Exam preparation practice for 9-1 English paper 1 based on Wells extract. Higher ability

4-6 lessons to practise for the English Paper 1 exam. Guide to all the reading AND writing questions, based on an extract from 'War of the Worlds'. It is for a higher ability, based on the text choice, but inevitably shares most skills with the HA ability practice versions which have a much more 'accessible' text. It is very straightforward and there are other versions available (based on 'War Horse', 'James and the Giant Peach' and Paper 2 'Flights') All the versions share a lot of material and are infinitely editable to choose another text and change the question details in the hectic revision period! You could even give a 'blank' version to top sets and ask them to find relevant text extracts, requiring them to really understand the focus of the question. NB: this also includes the lessons and resources in the introductory 'schemelet'.

Scheme of work for 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' Boyne KS3 notebook and powerpoints

Scheme of work for 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' byJohn Boyne. Aimed at KS3 and used for a top set Y8 very successfully but it is very flexible - differentiation by outcome has a bad reputation but this really can suit a very varied cohort... I have included some of the questions that the top set produced for a 'write your own questions' quiz as a guide should the class struggle. There is a powerpoint AND a notebook (Smartboard) version - if they don't both load, I will 'bundle' them so they are both available.
