A competitive spin on introducing the A293 Case Study 2018 to your students. Put the timer up on the board and have students read the Case Study while answering the questions on Bowton / Tom's Toys / GG Toys plc. Have them write the answers on scrap paper and check the time when they are finished. Quickly take up the answers. Put the timer back at 0.00 and have the students do the questions AGAIN on a new piece of paper. The purpose is for them to see how much quicker they completed the questions, thereby demonstrating they are starting to become more familiar with the Case Study (hopefully they were even able to complete some of the questions without referring to the Case Study). An extension looking at keywords and key issues is on the second page.

Using the powerpoint presentation and/or their own research and discussion, students fill in the Methods of Saving & Borrowing table worksheet. This the second in a series of lessons around saving / borrowing / budgeting for a holiday, however it can also be used as a stand alone lesson. (Lessons 1, 3-5 also available - "1: Design your dream holiday" / "3: Research banking products" / "4: Budgeting" / "5: Applying" individually or together in a bundle "Saving, Borrowing, Budgeting for a Dream Holiday." Can be used as PSHE lessons, Introduction to Financial / Economic Awareness, Travel & Tourism. Probably more geared towards KS3, but could work for KS4 depending on ability level and prior knowledge.

This lesson was created as an introduction to budgeting / saving for a one-off KS2 lesson, but would also work as a KS3 lesson (depending on whether they have been introduced to budgeting / saving before) 1) Have each student fill out the "Things to do at the Fair!" tick sheet - ticking all the things they would like to do at the fair. 2) Give out the "How much will it Cost?" information sheet so that students are able to fill in the "How much will it Cost?" calculation sheet. At the end of this step, each student should have a total amount amount of money they would need in order to do everything they wanted to do at the Fair. 3) Print out (on card if possible) and cut out all the money scenario cards. Hand one to each student and have them calculate how they will pay for their day at the Fair. (Depending on the class, it may work best to have them do this in partners so they can discuss with each other) 4) As an extension, students could a) discuss with the class what they will do to budget / save for their day at the Fair; b) they could think other ways to earn / save money; c) they could modify their "Things to do at the Fair" tick sheet so that it is more affordable; d) they could calculate how much a day at the fair would cost for their whole family.

A creative project that uses Enterprise, Citizenship, Oracy, Design and Teamwork. Great for KS3 on a PSHE drop day or over a few sessions or for a cross-curricular project. Can also run as a competition and have a few groups presenting to judges in front of an audience. The assessment sheet can be used by the teacher and/or for peer assessment. I have included the powerpoint of some previousYear 8 Enterprise students (names changed) as an example.

***NOTE: to do this activity, you will need to purchase healthy snacks for the students to taste*** This was an activity for my Year 8 form group, but would work over a range of year groups. I was tired of watching them eat unhealthy snacks all the time and not only wanted to introduce them to some healthier options, but to start explaining WHY we are always going on about healthy eating and exercise from an academic point of view. The activity: Print out the checklist (slide 4) for each student. Set up all the different snacks around the classroom. (Adjust the snacks on the checklist as needed). Students go around to all the different stations and fill out their checklist. By the end, they will hopefully have identified a few healthier snack options which they like (and which will be better for them than their usual crisps and chocolate bars!)
