WJEC GCSE English Paper 2 Section B exam study workshop

This was a 2hour workshop I carried out with C/D borderline pupils. The Teacher’s guide and pupil worksheets to accompany it are listed separately under ‘various worksheets.’ I take no credit for the second half of the powerpoint which I stumbled across through google. It went down really well with pupils and produced some promising pieces of improved work.

Edexcel GCSE English Language Paper 1 Mock / Revision Workshop

Exactly ‘what it says on the tin’. The aim of the presentation was to build confidence and understanding of exam expectations whilst giving students time to respond to exam style questions in a supportive environment. It covers every question on Language paper 1 and would work well as a revision workshop too as it reminds students of language / structural devices as well as useful acronymns for the evaluation question. There are also slides with exemplar answers and model plans for the writing tasks. We actually didn’t have time to cover every slide over the course of two lessons - we adapted along the way. It was pitched at students aiming for grades 4-6. I prepared this for year 11 students using one of the exam style assessments featured in the Pearson Edexcel GCSE 9-1 English Language Text Anthology (which is a super resource). The extract is available from the free online Ebook; it is an extract from Tess of the D’Urbervilles. The first sentence is: ‘Left to his reflections Abraham soon grew drowsy.’ and the last sentence is: "We can’t go on with our load - Prince is killed!’ Feedback and reviews are welcomed. I have an extensive bank of resources but sadly don’t have the greatest IT skills (fairly new to ‘uploading’). Thanks!

GCSE English Lang. Paper 2: analysis of language, structure and evaluation responses

42 slide PPT which would be suitable for AQA or Edexcel. Relevant for Language Paper 2 study / revision. It uses non-fiction articles about Glastonbury which were part of WJEC 4171/02 June 2013 English Language exam and is available online and an article about Lewis Clarke which is attached. The slides include exemplar responses and tasks for students to do. The slides focus on: how to analyse language in a non-fiction text, followed by how to analyse structure, ending with how to write an evaluation. Some slides will refer to Edexcel marking criteria and exam structure but the main content is appropriate for other exam boards. It has been pitched at grades 4 - 6. Feedback is appreciated and I’d be happy to reply to any questions. Thanks!

A Christmas Carol Quotes Work Booklet & Retrieval Practice PPT

Making Knowledge Stick An 18 page student revision booklet containing 14 essential quotes from ‘A Christmas Carol’ linked to a 40 slide PPT for retrieval practice of the same 14 quotes. Frustrated with students who can’t recall GCSE English Literature quotes? This is the perfect package to ensure you can maximise their understanding and help the knowledge to stick. It can be a teaching tool to use alongside teaching of the text or for revision lessons. The quotes are essential because once memorised, understood and written about, they can be incorporated into any GCSE English Literature essay. For each quote, students need to spend some time completing 7 steps. The first 3 steps require them to annotate the space around the quote, whilst the last 4 steps require them to write paragraphs in the boxes provided. A model example of all 7 completed steps is provided. The booklet can be used under a visualiser during ‘I do, we do, you do’ and could also be completed for homework. The booklet links to the 40 slide PPT which features low risk retrieval activities which steadily increase in difficulty to aim for independent learning as well as moving from memorising to essay writing. I have used this post-teaching as ‘do now’ or ‘starter’ tasks to keep knowledge fresh but it could be used as a teaching aid alongside the booklet. The PPT tasks have a beige background and the model answers have a green background. Tasks could be 5-10 minute starters, whilst some could easily become full lessons. I think both resources are self-explanatory and easily adaptable but I’m happy to answer any questions. Look out for other Literature texts, which will be uploaded soon.

Everything you need to take students step by step through improving responses for Language Paper 1 (reading section only). Includes the accompanying text, a booklet for students to record answers, marks, marking criteria for self-assesment etc. The teacher’s PPT supports the booklet and includes exemplar responses which target aiming for grade 5 and 6. Likely to last approximately 5-6 lessons depending on pace /ability. We noticed a marked different in raw scores after students used the booklet.
