Worksheet where children can practice reading, spelling and using high frequency words. Words on the sheets are words my class needed to do at the time (some at the end are not high frequency words) but can easily be changed for different words.

An experiment I have used for heart rate and the affects of exercise. Children generally know their heart rate will increase but are suprised by their recovery rate and the differences between different sports.
This is just a worksheet that I made to help my class understand fractions and decimals. It is not a very exciting worksheet but I taught fractions using cubes, fraction sticks, fraction circles etc and then used the sheets for homework. The first one I got them to colour the fraction circles in in class.
Beginning of the year activity - children complete time capsule sheet and date it. I then keep it until the end of the school year. End of the year activity - children complete review of the year sheet. I then give them the time capsule sheet to compare. Children find it really interesting to compare the changes with themselves and one another!
English Activity I put together for an EAL lower KS2 class, but could be used with younger children with a bit of adapting. I used the book 'My Many Coloured Days' by Dr Seuss, for children to write simple poems about colours, emotions and behaviour. I also focussed on reading with expression and discussing and describing emotions. In the planning there was one lesson a week which was an hour long, but could be done in a shorter time frame.
What is energy? PowerPoint and worksheets with a link to a useful website. Focusses on a definition for energy, forms of energy, potential and kinetic energy and transfer of energy. To be used over a few lessons.
Diary writing activities and help sheet, focussing on writing an interesting diary in the past tense. I designed this to use with EAL pupils but could also be used with younger children. I have uploaded the document in PDF and word so you can adapt it if you need to.
Grammar assessment I have used with EAL children in year 5 at the beginning of the year. I found it helpful to decide which grammar topics I needed to focus on with the class.
Assembly written for a year 4 class to do about Roald Dahl. We had been learning about the BFG but the assembly includes Miss Trunchbull, facts about Roald Dahl, the 'Dirty Beasts' poem Crocodile, the song 'Pure Imagination' and the children's own soundscape about 'Dream Country'. Could easily be adapted.
Literacy unit based on Origins - A Lone Robot animation (the animation is available on the Literacy Shed website under The Inspiration Shed). I used this for a year 5 class who are mainly ESL but could be used with younger children too. The purpose of the unit was to encourage the use of descriptive writing and introduce the 'show not tell' writing technique before planning and writing their own narrative.
These are spelling books I made for the new curriculum. Books 1 and 2 were made for KS2 EAL children who needed to learn KS1 sounds. Then book 3 is for year 3, book 4 for year 4, book 5 for year 5 and book 6 for year 6. I made them last summer all in one go, so I apologise for any mistakes but I have been through them so I am hoping I have found them. We used them in KS2 this last year and they seem to work well. There is a LCWC sheet, a spelling meanings page, a spelling activity and for books 3 and 4 a handwriting page which I did by hand but these could be taken out.
I have been thinking about how to reward good communication in the class. I had seen the idea for 'quiet critters' online and wanted to use them with my class (who are all EAL children) for speaking English. I then thought why leave it at that and thought I could use them to reward good communication. I have written out the reasons why children would be given a communication critter (a Pom Pom with Googly eyes) to sit on their desk which they will then have to keep on their desk until the end of the lesson in order to colour in a communication critter on their reward chart. I plan to discuss what good communication is and get the children to act out examples which I will take pictures of and display around the communication critter rules.
Literacy resources I have made for a KS2 EAL class based on Alice in Wonderland but the 'nursery version' of the story, also by Lewis Carroll, which I have also attached a copy of. This version of the story has the main characters and events in the story but they are simply explained, which makes it easier for children to understand and expand themselves.
I have made this grid to record understanding of grammar concepts for an EAL class of KS2 pupils who will be preparing to sit KET exams in two years time. This could be adapted though to record understanding of grammar for other KS2 classes. I have made use of the KET handbook for teachers to advise grammar points that have to be covered as well as adding some targets from the English National Curriculum. I plan to use this over a two year period.
A nice activity for the beginning of the year for older primary children to write about themselves. My class then wrote it out on plain paper and decorated it for a class display without their names at the top and we guessed which poem belonged to who.
I have made plenary challenge cards for my year 4 class although they could be used with other age groups. I have laminated these so wanted to make them fairly simple activities they could do in their jotters when they have finished, to get them thinking a little bit more about their learning. There are 24 different plenary activities but most can be done independently or a partner and with little equipment. Can then be used for class or group discussion.

Each child decorated their own puzzle piece with things they liked and their name, we talked about how we were all individuals and had decorated the pieces differently. We then put the puzzle pieces as a border around the 'welcome to class 5' and talked about how we were now joined together as one class, each bringing something different to the group. We then displayed it on the class door. 16 puzzle pieces fit around an A4 piece of paper but if you needed more you could double the row or use an A3 sheet of paper.
