Do take a look at my other resources for this course as I have uploaded a full set of lesson presentations and activities for delivering the IA, Standard Level Unit 3 and Higher Level Unit 5. Bundle of Resources for Teaching the IA Inquiry Project for IB Digital Society

(0)
If you’ve just starting teaching IB Digital Society this year, you’ll know that there are hardly any resources out there to use, apart from the textbook I’ve uploaded the full set of lesson presentations that I am using for the IA (Inquiry Project) aspect of the course, with presentations, suggested activities and the 3 example IAs and Process Documents provided by the IB I would recommend that you start with the activities shown in the ‘Analysis of Exemplar Inquiry Projects’ powerpoint. Get your students to look at the 3 example projects, and then ask students how they would mark them, using the IA Rubric. Finally, ask students to compare their grades with the grades from the IB You should then be ready to start the next powerpoint ‘Creating Your Inquiry Project (IA)’. Students should use the ‘Evaluate Your Topic’ template to decide on an emerging technology to investigate, then complete the Process Document template. Finally, students should prepare a set of slides and a script for their 10min video using the templates provided. I am hoping to add seperate bundles for the IB Digital Society Standard Level course soon, as well as resources for the teaching the Extended Essay for this course Please do give me feedback on these resources as I have also started teaching the course this year, and would love to know if you have found these useful, or if there is anything you think could be added / improved or removed!

Women in Tech / Sexism Debate / ITGS unit of work

(1)
Where are the women in technology? I first started writing this unit of work after the Google engineer James Damore released a memo in July 2017 that stated that the reason why there were less females in technology was because their gender meant they didn’t enjoy using or working with technology. Subsequent to this was the Harvey Weinstein scandal and #MeToo movement where misogyny and workplace harassment came under the spotlight, as did the President Club furore, Oxfam sex abuse as well as burgeoning awareness campaigns in sports, banking, the BBC and government. This unit of work can used be as a debate project where pupils can choose to investigate an aspect of the debate / a whole class debate theme / as an assembly or as a one off discussion lesson on women in technology (such as for International Womens Day on 9th March, Ada Lovelace Day on 10th Dec etc). It also works well for politics, ITGS and LPS / PSHCE. I’ve included the lesson presentation with Success Criteria for constructing a debate, James Damore’s memo, a slideshow on top 20 females in technology, various starter activities, some useful links with statistics, news articles or further reading, and some suggested comebacks for tricky questions that might crop up. This is a tough but important aspect of technology to teach so I’d love to hear how you get on and how it has worked with your classes. Please give me any feedback on aspects that could be improved or new links, sites or activities that have worked for you. If you enjoyed these resources, please check out my others on programming, Illustrator, graphic design, animation and various others.

Hour of Code Companion Resources

I’ve created a set of companion resources to go alongside the Hour of Code activities on the HoC website, as I kept finding that although, my pupils loved using them, they kept getting stuck on the same levels and didn’t know how to grasp the basics, such as using repeats or variables to make their code more efficient. I’ve picked out some of the most challenging levels in the Hour of Code activities, the Frozen and Plant vs. Zombies activities. Once they’ve got a grasp of how to use the repeats and variables on these activities, they should then be able to go on the complete the other activities independently. Also attached is a scaffolded version of the worksheet guide for pupils with additional learning needs. Find the the Hour of Code “Frozen” activity by searching for code dot org frozen stage 1 Find the the Hour of Code “Plants vs. Zombies” activity by searching for code dot org Plants vs Zombies If you liked these, please check out my other resources if you enjoyed these - programming, HTML, animation, drones, using Adobe Illustrator and other graphic design bits and pieces. Bundle of Adobe Illustrator starters

(0)
A bundle of starter activities for using Adobe Illustrator in a Powerpoint and Word file - missing words, name the tool, memory round, mix and match, fill in the blanks, Odd One Out, Taboo, What's on the Board and a set of printable Bingo cards. You can display these on the board, or print them out if you wish. How to play Taboo - choose two pupils, one who will describe the word on the board and one who will try and guess. The pupil who is guessing must face away from the board. The pupil describing MUST NOT say any of the Taboo words. They can't say 'It sounds like...' or what letter the word begins with. They have 60 seconds to get their partner to work out what it is. You can then swap them out and pick two different pupils, or choose a winner to stay on. How to play What's on the Board - choose two pupils, one who will describe the word on the board and one who will try and guess. The pupil who is guessing must face away from the board. The pupil describing should try to describe as many words as possible (you can set a timer if you wish). I have also uploaded a set of skills sheets with accompanying videos and a printable help guide if you have found these useful.
