The Royal Mint Museum

The Royal Mint Museum has one of the finest collections of coins and related material in the world. Our collection covers the long history of the Royal Mint which can trace back it’s beginnings to the late 9th century. We want to provide people of all ages with the opportunity to learn, discover and explore the remarkable history of the Royal Mint.

Established in 1816, the Museum was originally intended as a source of inspiration for Royal Mint engravers, a function it retains to this day, it has grown and developed into a collection about how money is made and how the Royal Mint has evolved over the last 1,100 years. Today the Museum offers a full education service, and we are increasing our digital reach to make our education materials and experiences as accessible as possible to schools and groups across the UK.

Virtual visits

As part of our educational outreach programme, the Royal Mint Museum offers free Virtual Visit sessions for school groups of all ages. Virtual Visits are bespoke lesson-length sessions, delivered digitally by the Royal Mint Museum team to classes of any size or age. At approximately 50 minutes long, these sessions include audio-visual elements, question-and-answer interactivity, and the chance for children to examine items from the Royal Mint Museum collection with a member of the Museum team.

Each session is individually tailored to fit the needs of the school and curriculum through consultation with the teacher, and all sessions are offered completely free. Session topics address a wide range of curriculum areas, including the art and design that goes into making coins, the mathematics of money, the science and technology involved in the production process, and the history of money in the United Kingdom.

Outreach

The Museum also offers physical outreach sessions for schools and colleges within a reasonable distance from its site in South Wales. These sessions can be tailored to the needs of the school through consultation with the teacher. We can bring objects and interactive activities straight into your classroom. We also deliver outreach sessions for SEND groups.

Short story competition

Every year we host a popular story writing competition for pupils aged 8 to 11. The topic of the story competition changes each year and there are a number of prizes on offer for both the authors of the stories and their schools.

Schools can win up to £5000 of vouchers to invest in their school library. The winning author has their story illustrated by a professional artist, with runners up prizes of commemorative coins.

Our 2025 competition is on the theme of Sustainable Futures and our guest judge this year is broadcaster and presenter Michaela Strachan, who will be choosing the overall winning story.

The story competition has been running for five years and is open to both schools and home educated children anywhere in the UK. More information is available here.
